Chapter 1 Clues
At night.
I finally had the time to take a breath after putting my daughter in bed.
I sat on the bed and scrolled through my phone idly.
Suddenly, my finger stopped swiping when I saw a live-streaming channel. I immediately sat up straight and stared at my phone with wide eyes. Shame that the streamer had turned her camera away from the crowd.
My heart was thumping, and my hand became sweaty. I hastily checked the time on the video and made sure that it was a live feed from my city.
I quickly turned off the app and made a video call to Oswald Price. He was my husband and was on a three-day business trip in Bellen City. But I just saw him on the live streaming of my city. There was a woman in his arms.
He didn't pick up until the phone rang for a long time. The camera shook before focusing on Oswald's handsome face. He said gently, "Hello, honey."
"Where are you?" I asked while glancing at the scene behind him. It looked like a hallway of a restaurant, and Oswald was wearing a white shirt with a tie.
The man I saw on the livestream was in a grey trench coat.
"I'm having dinner with a client. I came out to answer your call. What's wrong?" Oswald asked. "Does Jocelyn go to bed?"
"Are you in Bellen City?" instead of answering, I asked another question.
"Of course. Are you OK?" Oswald answered firmly and looked at me confusedly.
"Yes. I'm... fine," I replied distractedly before asking, "When will you be back?"
"Soon... I'll come back as soon as I finish up. Do you miss me?" Oswald smiled lovingly. "I'll hurry up. It's late. Go to bed early, OK? I need to go back to work. Bye."
He blew me a kiss before hanging up.
I sat in a stupor with the phone in my hand, feeling guilty for questioning Oswald.
Oswald was a great husband. He was good-looking and loved me and our daughter deeply.
When we first met, he wasn't rich. Although he was born in the River City, his family was poor and his sister was a sickly child. I chose him among all the suitors because of his look.
After graduation, I mortgaged my parents' house to start a building materials company from scratch with him just because I wanted to stay here with him. Oswald was in charge of the suppliers while I was out finding clients day and night. I had to drink so much that I nearly had stomach bleeding.
As our company started thriving, I got pregnant and decided to quit. From then on, Oswald ran the company while I stayed at home to take care of our child.
How time flew. Our daughter, Jocelyn Price, was four years old. We were a happy and wealthy family that everyone envied.
We never had a wedding. Oswald always felt guilty about it and talked about making up for me by providing me with a great life.
He was such a nice husband. There was no way that he cheated.
I chuckled and blamed myself for watching too many soap operas.
Lying on the bed, I still couldn't get the fleeting image out of my head. I thought it was because I missed Oswald too much. What was more, the coat looked too familiar. I ironed the extra same coat for Oswald before he left.
My conclusion was it was a mistake. A man who looked like Oswald happened to wear the same coat.
Oswald came home early the next day. He bought many sweets back for Jocelyn.
He pulled us into his arms, and we sat happily together.
I cooked the dishes he liked for dinner, wanting to give him a treat.
When he sat down at the dinner table, he glanced at me and said casually, "Take a shower first to remove the cooking smell in your hair."
I took a sniff nonchalantly and smirked, "This is the smell of home. You should like it."
Oswald smiled indulgently and ruffled my hair before shoving a spoonful of food in my mouth. He then gave Jocelyn a spoon too. "Fine. You're both my sweethearts. Let's eat."
After dinner, I put Jocelyn to bed swiftly and took a shower. I leaned in and asked in a sultry voice, "How do I smell now?"
Oswald smiled and pinched me softly. "I miss you so much, honey."
He seemed extra excited that night. After sex, Oswald went to the bathroom. Watching his striking figure from behind, I smiled contently.
Wanting to shower, I got up but stopped when I noticed the flash of Oswald's phone. It was a Line message. I glanced at it and froze in place...
Chapter 2 Too Much Information
I grabbed his phone to see who sent the message. Oswald came back and snatched the phone out of my hand. He glanced at it and said, "It's from Lelia." I stared at him in shock.
"Are you hiding something from me?" I asked, feeling unsure.
The message was brief: "Does she know?"
But I could sense there was more behind the simple words. Obviously, they were hiding something from me. And the sender seemed close to Oswald.
I stared at Oswald carefully. My woman's sixth sense gave me an ominous feeling.
Oswald laughed and threw the phone back on the nightstand. He pulled me up and hugged me tightly before kissing me. "You're paranoid. We're talking about our mom, not you. Lelia used me as an excuse to ask for money again."
Lelia Price was Oswald's younger sister. She was a sickly girl and was spoiled like those rich girls. Although she was in her twenties, she didn't have a steady job and only cared about having fun and shopping.
I huffed, "Again? Does she forget who gave your mom the money?"
Oswald smiled and bent down to carry me up. I was still naked, and he walked toward the bathroom while kissing me. "OK. I know that is your money. I'm lucky to have such a thoughtful wife."
I was pleased as I had always been generous to his family. In my opinion, the secret to a happy family was to love your family.
After fooling around in the shower, I was utterly satisfied and had forgotten all my questions and displeasures.
Lying in Oswald's arms, I brought up buying a house near a good school again. The issue haunted me for a long time.
We had lived in this small apartment since we were married. But I wanted Jocelyn to have a better educational background.
She was about to go to elementary school, yet there weren't any good schools in our neighborhood.
We saved enough money for a house. But Oswald kept on stalling it. He said that River City was developing quickly. We needed to find a perfect location in case we picked wrong and had to move constantly.
But when I talked about buying a house this time, Oswald didn't raise an objection. He patted me on the shoulder and kissed my forehead. "Fine. I'll keep an eye out for a suitable house and bring you to see it when I find one. It's up to you."
I liked his answer and fell asleep, dreaming about a beautiful big house.
The next morning.
As soon as I dropped Jocelyn in kindergarten, I received my friend Eleanor Myers' call. She asked me to meet her at our usual spot.
I gladly said yes and hailed a taxi.
Eleanor was my only friend in River City besides my family. We told each other everything. It was rare for her to call me this early as she was a busy woman as an agent of a media company.
I walked inside our favorite cafe and immediately noticed Eleanor. She was sitting in the corner with a laptop on the desk. Her fair hands danced on the keyboard, and she looked amazing when the morning sunlight shone on her.
Eleanor waved when she saw me.
I hurried over and asked playfully, "Are you having a slow day? Why do you ask me out so early?"
Eleanor rolled her eyes and glanced at me. "Because I care about you."
"How sweet." I sat down and took a sip of the coffee she ordered for me without asking. "You're a busy businesswoman while I'm a free housewife."
"Shame on you. Oswald spoils you so badly that you have lost your edge. A friendly reminder. Stay alert. Don't be stupid." She shot me a pointed look.
My heart sank when I heard her warning. I asked, "What? What do you mean?"
Eleanor lowered her eyes to look at her laptop, as if she was covering for something. "Nothing. I just wanted to take a jab at you."
She suddenly looked up and said, "I saw Oswald two days ago."
Chapter 3 Anxious
"Two days ago? Where?" I blurted out, feeling anxious.
Eleanor noticed my expression and asked, "Why do you act this way?"
"Where did you see him?" I continued asking, not in the mood to joke.
Eleanor's phone rang at the critical moment. She glanced at the screen and gestured to me to keep quiet before picking up the call.
She sat up straight after a few words. She looked at me and said, "What... I'll be there now."
She shut her laptop off and shoved it into her bag hastily before pointing at the door. "I need to run. Bye."
"Hey... Eleanor..."
She ignored me and ran out regardless of my shocked expression. My question was never answered.
Eleanor saw Oswald two days ago.
But Oswald was on a business trip in Bellen City then. Where did Eleanor meet him? I doubted Eleanor was on a business trip too.
I turned around and closed my mouth, feeling disappointed and scared.
My mind kept on replaying the live-stream shot. But I couldn't be sure that that man was Oswald.
Did he lie to me?
Maybe he wasn't in Bellen City?
Was he cheating on me with another woman?
I sat idly in the cafe and was lost in thought. I started shivering uncontrollably as if I was in an ice cave, though I was sitting under the bright sunlight.
What should I do if Oswald was cheating on me? What about Jocelyn? What about our family?
I spent the day like a zombie and even forgot to pick up Jocelyn.
Luckily, Oswald was home earlier than usual. Realizing that I forgot to pick up Jocelyn, he comforted me and went to the kindergarten.
I told myself to get it together and started cooking.
Lelia came to our house before Oswald returned with Jocelyn. She had the key to our house and always acted like this was her home too. I hated it, but Oswald had indulged her.
When she saw me in the kitchen, Lelia put down her purse and came over. She leaned against the kitchen door and asked, "Why did you start cooking dinner so late? Where's Oswald?"
"He went to pick up Jocelyn," I answered while washing the vegetables.
"At this hour?" Lelia sounded judgmental.
She was always like that. As a spoiled child, she acted like the head of the family and often gave me the cold shoulder. I was used to her attitude. After all, she was Oswald's sister. I had no choice but to accept her.
"Do we have onions? I want onion rings," Lelia asked rudely.
I pointed at the refrigerator. "Check the freezer. Take some out if you can find them. I think Oswald has brought it."
I heard Jocelyn's sweet voice at the door. "Mom, I'm home. Why did you forget to pick me up today?"
She ran into the kitchen and tilted her face to look at her with her doe eyes.
I smiled in embarrassment and pinched her small nose with a wet hand. "I was busy. I promise it won't happen again."
Oswald walked in with Jocelyn's backpack in his hand, smiling at us lovingly.
Lelia turned to the door and said softly, "Oswald."
"What brings you here?"
Oswald asked nonchalantly. He put down the backpack, took off his coat, and came into the kitchen. He embraced me from behind and took off the apron before putting it on himself. "I'll cook. You can keep Jocelyn company."
Lelia stared at Oswald and said sarcastically, "What a good husband. I want to find someone like you."
Oswald retorted, "Get out. You're not helping. Just wait for dinner."
"No. I'll help," Lelia said sweetly and squeezed into our tiny kitchen. Her choice of words was inappropriate. "I want to play husband and wife with you."
I snorted inwardly, "How shameless. She can never find someone like Oswald if she keeps on goofing around. The person who marries her must have done something terribly wrong in his last life. Only Oswald can put up with her."
I grew more upset with Lelia in the house. She wasn't a little girl anymore. Yet, she always attached herself to Oswald and put on an innocent act in front of him because she wanted money.
The Price family was poor before as Oswald's dad was the only one who had a steady job. Oswald's mom would work part-time jobs. And Lelia was in and out of the hospital. They could barely make ends meet, so Oswald had low self-esteem then.
The situation improved when our company got on track. In fact, Oswald and I had worked hard to support his family.
Lelia was the worst as she always asked for money without a trace of guilt. As a freeloader, she was proud and only had the energy to have fun. When she needed to work, she always claimed that she was too weak.
I dragged Jocelyn out of the kitchen. Out of sight, out of mind.
My phone rang. Eleanor was calling...
Chapter 4 Truth Hurts
I didn't pick up the call until I was back in the bedroom. I pouted when I answered, "Good for you. You left me hanging there."
"Something came up in the office." Eleanor sounded tired, her voice hoarse. "I called you as soon as I finished working. Stop whining. I'm not as carefree as you."
I hesitated and asked, "Well... You said you saw Oswald two days ago. Where? Do you remember the extra time?"
I had been meaning to ask these questions all day.
Eleanor paused significantly before replying calmly, "I forgot. I saw him on the street while driving."
"OK." Somehow, I felt disappointed.
But I stopped worrying. My palms were sweaty when I uncurled my fists.
I laughed lightly and thought, "Will I be happy if I verify that Oswald is cheating?"
I had to admit that Oswald was the pillar of my world. My life would collapse without him.
"You love him so much that you get excited whenever we talk about him. Think for yourself more. Jocelyn is in kindergarten now. You should start working again. Don't tell me that you want to depend on Oswald forever. If you keep on cooping up at home, you'll be completely disconnected from society. By then, Oswald will be your whole world," Eleanor shouted teasingly.
I chuckled in embarrassment and sighed, "But Oswald said that..."
"See? It always Oswald says this and Oswald says that... I'm right. You can only see Oswald now and you follow him so blindly. Will you kill yourself if he tells you to? Will you be fooled by him willingly?" Eleanor said angrily.
"Take that back! Oswald will never fool me," I retorted.
"Right. He won't and I will," Eleanor snorted.
"Truth hurts. Think about it carefully. You have to create your own value. Stop being a housewife who only cares about her family. That's not love. That's stupid. If he loves you, he'll show that he cares. When your only topic is your household chords, soon, he'll lose his interest in you.
"I didn't want to lecture you. But you've given up yourself for Oswald and Jocelyn."
Eleanor babbled and I never had the chance to retort.
Sensing my silence, she stopped ranting and softened her tone. "Cassie, I hope I can see that confident woman again. You were a brilliant student and my idol then. I feel sorry for you that you wasted your talent."
"Stop it. You're just sweet-talking to make up for the lecture. I wonder who pissed you off today and you put it out on me."
Both of us laughed.
Eleanor and I were always honest with each other.
Although she said something familiar before, her talk gave me a strange feeling this time. For some reason, I was scared that Eleanor was hinting at something.
Oswald knocked and walked in. He smiled gently, "Honey, dinner is ready."
He came to urge me to have dinner. Eleanor heard his voice and said, "Alright. You should go."
She then lowered her voice and warned, "Think carefully about what I said earlier. Don't be fooled by the perfect picture at present."
Eleanor ended the call. Oswald pulled me into his arms and kissed me. "Who is that?"
"Eleanor."
"What are you talking about? Why the secrecy?" Oswald smiled and asked a seemingly casual question. He knew about my close relationship with Eleanor as the three of us were classmates. "I haven't seen her in a while."
I paused at Oswald's statement.
So, Eleanor didn't see him up close two days ago. I felt better as I thought I was overthinking again. Maybe Eleanor was mistaken like me.
"What's wrong?" Oswald noticed that I had zoned out and bent down to meet my eyes. He pinched my cheeks with both hands and kissed me again before asking lovingly, "Why do you space out? What's on your mind?"
His gaze was filled with concern. I snapped out of my stupor and smiled. "I'm fine. Let's have dinner."
Oswald pulled me in and kissed my cheek before staring into my eyes. "Don't hide anything from me, OK? We can solve the problem together."
I wrapped my arms around his waist and tilted my head up, smiling sweetly. "How could you call me paranoid when you act this way? I told you that I was fine. Come on."
Oswald returned my smile and relaxed. He kissed me again before pulling me out of the bedroom, his arm around my shoulder.
Somehow, my doubt grew heavier.
Chapter 5 Proof
Lelia didn't stay long after dinner. She said to Oswald, "Give me a ride home."
I glanced at her and she ignored my pointed look and clung to Oswald's arm.
Oswald turned to me and smiled, asking for my approval with his eyes.
I didn't say anything, so Oswald said awkwardly, "Wait till I finish washing the dishes for Cassie."
I was sick of Lelia and didn't want to spend one more second with her, so I waved dismissively, "Just go! I'll clean up."
"Dad, where are you going? Take me with you." Jocelyn was clingy and stood up in her chair, opening her arms for a hug.
Oswald hurriedly carried her up and kissed her on the cheek, making a loud sound. "I'll be home soon. Be good and stay with Mom."
"Kid, why do you want to come with us?" Lelia said. She was always impatient towards Jocelyn.
I took Jocelyn over from Oswald. "Sweetheart, Dad is giving Aunt Lelia a ride home. He'll be back in no time. Would you stay home with me?"
Jocelyn blinked and nodded. She wrapped her arms around my neck and turned to say to Oswald, "OK. Be back soon."
Oswald kissed her and nodded firmly, "Yes."
He picked up his car key and left. Lelia wrapped her arm around his and turned back to smirk at me. I ignored her.
Oswald came home late, but I didn't raise any questions. He was a dutiful son as I assumed he spent time talking to his parents.
He got up early the next morning, saying that he had a lot of work in the office and a 9 o'clock meeting. He drove Jocelyn to her school as it saved me a trip.
I had to admit that Oswald was thoughtful and sweet. I wouldn't ask for a better husband. As Eleanor said, he spoiled me rotten. Everyone thought he was perfect.
I tidied up the clothes he changed out, picking out the ones that needed dry cleaning. I checked their pockets one by one.
However, I found something that shook my world. I finally woke up from my dream when I saw that thing. It proved every doubt I had about Oswald.
It was a pack of condoms. I had a contraceptive injection after giving birth to Jocelyn. We didn't need condoms.
Heartbroken, I threw the disgusting object out hysterically.
Oswald cheated.
He betrayed my trust. For years, I lived in poverty and worked day and night for our life. Yet, he cheated on me as soon as we had money.
I knelt on the floor, feeling desperate. I hugged my head and couldn't stop picturing how he had sex with another woman. My heart shattered into a thousand pieces.
I devoted everything to him and our family, including my youth, my love, and... Yet, he repaid my sacrifice with betrayal.
Calming down from my sorrow, I called myself over and over in my head. I said to myself, "Cassie, get a hold of yourself. I can't lose everything I've worked hard for. I have to have a closure."
I put the condoms away and tried my hardest to control my emotions. Balling my hands into tight fists, I swore that I wouldn't give him what I built.
I took a deep breath and strengthened my clothes before hailing a taxi to go to my company.
Chapter 6 Another Mrs. Price
I had only visited Prosper Materials once after it moved to the Glorious Building. Oswald gave me a tour when he rented the place. Prosper Materials took up a whole floor, giving me a sense of pride and achievement.
On that day, we embraced in front of the floor-to-ceiling window in his office. He said to me, his voice full of love, "Thank you, honey. You gave me the capital to start a great career. My life turned around because of you. Believe me. I'll give this building to you soon."
I laughed bitterly as Oswald had broken his promise.
When I walked into the building, the young woman at the front desk asked me, "Which floor are you visiting? Who are you going to see?"
I told her that I was there to see Oswald. She looked me up and down before giving a standard smile. "I'm sorry, lady. Mr. Price is out with his wife."
My head spinned over the answer. Although I had prepared mentally, it didn't dull the shock.
I clenched my purse and tried my best to stay calm. Still, my voice raised an octave. "What? Are you sure?"
The receptionist eyed me confusedly and replied nonchalantly, "Yes, I'm sure. You're looking for the president of Prosper Materials, right? His company is on the 10th floor, and he went out with his wife this morning."
I swayed at her convinced answer. I had the urge to ask her who Oswald's wife was. Which wife? Who were I?
But I bit my tongue and gritted my teeth, running out of the Glorious Building.
I wanted some dignity. What was more, I hoped the receptionist was mistaken, so that Oswald could have some dignity left.
To confirm the receptionist's words, I called Orlando Richardson with trembling hands. He worked in the Marketing Department of Prosper Materials. I took a deep breath, so when Orlando picked up, I managed to ask calmly, "Orlando, is Oswald out of the meeting? He didn't answer my call. It's urgent."
Orlando was one of Prosper Materials' management. He knew whether there was a meeting or not. He stuttered, "The meeting? Cassie, is that you? No, we don't have a meeting today. Mr. Price is out."
I said OK and ended the call.
At that moment, I had never been so powerless. My strained nerves snapped, and my legs shook. The power that had been supporting me was gone with a puff like a balloon being poked by a needle.
My hands trembled uncontrollably. I didn't have the courage to call Oswald and ask where he was.
What was the point?
All I could get was another lie. I didn't think I could ever trust him again.
I feared hearing his voice. I didn't want him to have another chance to fool me.
He was with another woman publicly in the Glorious Building. People in the building all assumed that they were a couple.
It wasn't hard to guess that the woman must have started going in and out of Prosper Materials and the building freely since the beginning. She was enjoying my privileges.
I stood idly on the streets. I searched the crowd, yet Oswald was nowhere to be found. He was like the sand in my hand. The tighter my grip was, the faster it was gone.
Collecting my thoughts, I decided that I must find out who this Mrs. Price was.
With wobbly legs, I hailed a taxi to go home and went to the market near our house. I brought the food Oswald liked and Jocelyn's favorite fruit.
I had to wait till he came home.
While doing the chords, I planned every step of my actions.
I always thought the day was too short. But at that moment, I felt the day was longer than ever. When the office hour was almost over, I called Oswald and asked about his whereabouts before telling him to pick up Jocelyn.
Oswald agreed without thinking.
Chapter 7 Search for Clues
When Oswald came back with Jocelyn from kindergarten, dinner was almost ready.
Jocelyn ran in happily and shouted, "Mom, I'm back. Dad picked me up."
Her sweet voice made me feel weepy, but I gritted my teeth and held my tears back. "I bought you your favorite fruit."
"Wow! Thank you, Mom. I want to eat it now! I can't wait!" Jocelyn ran out to Oswald. "Dad, I want to eat fruit!"
"Okay, but only a small piece now. You can eat as much as you want after dinner." Oswald washed his hands and peeled a small piece, handing it to the greedy Jocelyn.
Then he crammed into the narrow kitchen and hugged me from behind. "Why are there so many delicious dishes?"
I felt sick. Our happy family of three was in jeopardy.
"I made them for you. You must be tired after a business trip of several days." I smiled and casually asked, "Were you busy today?"
Oswald grunted "H'm" on my shoulder. My heart sank. I jogged his elbow and said, "Set the table for dinner."
Oswald's intimacy disgusted me. I wondered if he was thinking about another woman when he was hugging me.
When dinner was ready, I looked at Oswald with a forced smile. "Fancy a drink? It's been a long time since we last drank. I want to have a drink."
Oswald looked at me with doubt. "Why?"
"Anyway, there's nothing to do. Will you go out?" I asked while turning around to get the wine. "There are so many dishes. I want to do something romantic."
When I said this, I was heartbroken.
Oswald got drunk easily. In order not to arouse his suspicion, I poured him a little wine and filled half of my glass. Then we started drinking.
It had to be said that alcohol was a good thing. It made people excited and talkative. I pretended to be overjoyed and reminisced about college days and entrepreneurship in the past and our present life. It was quite a joy.
Seeing that I was in high spirits, Oswald refilled his glass and constantly reminded me not to drink too much, but he drank a lot.
When I helped Oswald to bed, he was dead drunk. I quickly bathed Jocelyn and put her down before I began to take action.
My heart pounded wildly. I felt as if I were a thief.
This was the first time over the years that I had checked Oswald's things. Now I realized how foolish I was in trusting him.
I rummaged through his pockets and briefcase but found nothing valuable.
I turned around and found Oswald's phone, but it needed his fingerprint to unlock it. I quietly walked up to him and grabbed his hand. Just then, he turned over, grabbed my hand, and stared at me, making me tremble with fear.
"Water... I want some water," Oswald said with a lisp.
I ran out and fetched a glass of water to feed Oswald, and then he fell asleep again.
After unlocking Oswald's phone, I couldn't wait to check it. None of the names on the call log was suspicious. I knew many of them. There were a few women, but they were ruled out.
I checked Oswald's Line and found that there were only several recent contacts. It seemed that he seldom used Line. I clicked on the first profile photo and saw the message sent on the day he returned: "Does she know?"
There were only three words with no other information, and there were no traces of deletion.
I wanted to check her Timeline, but it wasn't available. I couldn't find any clues. It seemed she was very careful. Oswald said it was Lelia, but I needed to verify it.
In picture favorites, there were only a few photos of me and Jocelyn and two of Lelia. I couldn't find any more information. I even used an App to scan the phone but found nothing. It was strange that there was nothing suspicious on Oswald's phone.
I tossed and turned that night. How could there be no trace?
Apparently, the other party wasn't an employee of the company or a staff member of the building. Otherwise, the receptionist would not call her "Mrs. Price".
Who on earth was the other party? Did she have other contact information?
Chapter 8 Eleanor?
The next morning, I struggled to wake up with dark circles beneath my eyes.
Oswald was surprised to see my haggard face. "Cass, you don't look well. Do you feel uncomfortable?"
"Don't you know I was sleepless because of you last night?" I said curtly.
Oswald was stunned for a moment and then hugged me with a wicked smile. "I won't drink afterward. Let's do some exercise to help you sleep!"
I didn't know why, but as soon as I heard what he said, I had a churning stomach. I rushed into the bathroom to vomit violently, with tears streaming down my face.
Oswald nervously patted my back. "What's the matter with you? I'll take you to the hospital."
I pushed him aside and concealed my emotions. "I'm fine. I didn't sleep well. Drive Jocelyn to kindergarten by the way. I'll go back to sleep."
Oswald picked me up, put me on the bed, and pulled over the blanket to cover me. "Get some sleep. I'll drive Jocelyn to kindergarten. Don't worry. Call me if you feel uncomfortable, okay?"
I nodded.
Oswald and Jocelyn closed the door and left while talking.
I immediately got up and ran to the window. Watching Oswald lead the bouncing Jocelyn into the car and drive out of the community gate, I couldn't help but choke with sobs.
I wished everything could be as before.
I turned around and quickly dressed myself. Different from my usual dressing style, I put on jeans and a T-shirt, put my hair into a ponytail and wore a hat.
Then I went to the coffee shop opposite the Glorious Building and took the best seat, watching the entrance of the building.
I knew this was the dumbest method, but it might be the most effective.
However, I found nothing for three consecutive days. I didn't even see Oswald because I forgot that he usually went in and out of the underground garage, where there was a direct passage to the lobby of the building.
On the fourth day, when I wondered what I should do, I saw Oswald come out of the building in a panic and walk to the square while talking on the phone.
My heart tightened. I got up immediately and left the coffee shop, following Oswald from afar anxiously.
It was not yet time for lunch break, and Oswald didn't drive, which meant that he wouldn't go far.
Oswald crossed the road at the intersection ahead and walked into a fancy coffee shop. It was a good place for elites in the nearby business district to rest and talk about things.
It seemed that Oswald came to see someone. I glanced at the bright and clean floor-to-ceiling window and wondered whether to follow him in.
Unexpectedly, I saw a familiar figure sitting by the last window on the second floor. It was Eleanor, who was always very busy. She wore a fine rose-pink professional suit, looking quite beautiful.
I chuckled at the coincidence. I didn't expect to see Eleanor there. I thought I could ask her to see whom Oswald was with, so I took out my phone and called her without hesitation.
As soon as I got through, I saw Eleanor pick up her phone and check it, but surprisingly, Oswald appeared by the window...
Eleanor pointed to the seat across from her and made a hush gesture to Oswald. Then she said to me on the phone, "Do you have nothing to do again?"
Her question got on my nerves. In the past, I would regard it as a joke between best friends and talk back immediately. But now, I thought she was mocking me, which made me sadder than seeing her with Oswald. I felt like I was slapped by her, with a burning sensation in my face.
I smiled and asked, "Where are you?"
"I'm in a meeting at the company. I'll call you back later." I saw that Eleanor's eyes were fixed on Oswald's handsome face.
Eleanor's answer left me stunned. I didn't expect that Oswald would be with Eleanor.
Chapter 9 An Accident
I smiled bitterly and said "Okay" before hanging up the phone.
It seemed to me that Eleanor was a scheming bitch. She kindly advised me to realize my own value, but now, she mocked maliciously that I was an idle person in front of my husband.
No wonder she tested me by saying that she saw Oswald. She was afraid of being found out. Moreover, Oswald also said that night he hadn't seen Eleanor for a long time.
I was heartbroken after realizing that I was fooled. In this unfamiliar city, I treated these two people with all my heart, but they deceived me. I didn't know who else I could trust.
I stared at the window and called Oswald without hesitation.
As I expected, Oswald's answer was the same as Eleanor's.
I ran straight to the coffee shop furiously, but the moment I reached the door, my phone rang. It was from Jocelyn's kindergarten, saying that Jocelyn fell off the slide and was sent to the hospital.
I turned pale with fear and hailed a taxi on the roadside to the kindergarten. On the way, I called Oswald again and told him that Jocelyn had an accident.
Oswald and I arrived at the Central Hospital almost simultaneously and found Jocelyn in the emergency room. She cried herself hoarse, and her head was covered in sweat. My heart ached when I saw this. I took Jocelyn from her teacher and held her tightly in my arms, checking her condition and blaming her teacher for her negligence.
Oswald's face was gloomy. He anxiously asked the doctor about Jocelyn's injury. The doctor told him the examination results in detail. "Fortunately, the little girl is young and supple. She fell on the foam board and vomited when she came. She suffers a large abrasion on her forehead and a mild concussion, so she has to stay in the hospital for observation."
Jocelyn's teacher was so scared that she cried bitterly. She looked at Oswald apologetically, and the principal of kindergarten apologized repeatedly.
Oswald was sullen, but he remained gentlemanly and rationally asked the principal about how Jocelyn fell. The principal said that Jocelyn was pushed down by a boy on the small platform of the slide.
Hearing this, I was scared. That platform was 1.5 meters high.
"How did you take care of Jocelyn? I trusted you and left her to you. How could you let her fall from the slide?" I couldn't bear it anymore and roared.
Oswald was stunned. He had never seen me so hysterical over the years. Jocelyn in my arms also trembled with fear and burst into tears.
Oswald comforted me. The principal felt sorry. She went to complete the hospitalization procedures and brought Jocelyn to the ward.
After everything was done, Eleanor called and asked where I was. I was speechless. Didn't she know where I was? But I still told her that Jocelyn fell and was in the hospital.
Not long after, Eleanor hurriedly entered the ward, anxiously asking about Jocelyn's injury.
Oswald was also in the ward. The two seemed calm, but I could see their vague eye contact. In particular, Oswald seemed a bit nervous.
I pretended not to know their relationship and deliberately asked Eleanor, "Did you finish the meeting so soon?"
"Hmm. It was not about something important," Eleanor lied. She asked me, "Why did you call me?"
"Oh, I had nothing to do. Oswald said he hadn't seen you for a long time, so I wanted to have lunch with you." As I said this, I stared at Eleanor.
Sure enough, Eleanor glanced at me and calmly said, "When Jocelyn leaves the hospital, I'll treat you three to a big meal."
Then she caressed Jocelyn's head and asked softly, "What do you think, sweetheart? You are the boss. I'll buy whatever you want to eat for you."
Jocelyn blinked her watery eyes, nodded sadly, and twitched her mouth.
Her forehead was swollen.
I instinctively flicked Eleanor's hand away and thought to myself, "Don't pretend to be nice. You start to please Jocelyn so that you can be her stepmother, right? Don't even think about it. I won't let you replace me!"
Eleanor was a bit stunned by my alienation. She glanced at me and asked in a low voice, "What's wrong with you?"
Chapter 10 An Astonishing Idea
Before I could answer, Oswald took a step forward and explained, "She's in a bad mood."
Then he put his hands on my shoulders and tightened his grip. He gently said to me, "Don't worry. The doctor said that it was nothing serious. Jocelyn can go home after observation."
"Go home?"
Hearing this, I couldn't control myself anymore. I got up, pushed Oswald away, and ran out of the ward, sobbing.
Our family was like a delicate vase that was covered in cracks and might break at some point. Even Eleanor had come to show off in front of me.
Eleanor followed me out. Jocelyn started crying again in the ward.
"Cass, what's wrong with you? Don't scare Jocelyn." Eleanor reached out and grabbed my arm. "Bear it even if you're in a bad mood. You have to take care of Jocelyn."
"Bear it? How can I bear it?" I roared and glared at Eleanor, making her stunned.
Realizing that I had lost control of myself, I tried to calm down, but I trembled uncontrollably, and my bottom lip quivered. "You can go back. We're fine. You're very busy. Don't delay your business."
I walked away from Eleanor and wiped my tears as I returned to the ward.
I pulled away Oswald, who was comforting Jocelyn, and sat next to her, tears rolling down my cheeks.
Oswald stood still. He spoke softly, "Don't worry, okay? You scared Jocelyn."
Eleanor came back after a long time. She stood there helplessly and opened and shut her mouth. The moment turned awkward.
"Cassie, I'll go back then. Don't worry. Give me a call if you need me," Eleanor said embarrassedly and then looked at Jocelyn. "Jocelyn, I have to go. When you get better, I will buy you something delicious."
I brushed away my tears and glanced at Oswald. "You haven't seen Eleanor for a long time, have you? Walk her out."
Oswald narrowed his eyes and said, "Okay. Don't cry."
At the door, Eleanor said, "Stop here. Go back to take care of Jocelyn. I'll come again when I have time."
Then she left in her high heels.
Oswald returned to me and asked softly, "What's wrong with you?"
"Don't you know?" I looked at Oswald with red eyes. Jocelyn started to cry again. I immediately leaned over and kissed her cheek. "Good girl. Don't be scared. There, there. I'm here."
I also cried.
Of course, I'd always be with Jocelyn. But how about Oswald? If we got a divorce, Jocelyn would...
I was surprised by this idea.
The ward was noisy that afternoon. The principal and the teacher of the kindergarten, the boy's parents, and Oswald's parents came to see Jocelyn, giving me a headache. It didn't become quiet until late at night.
Jocelyn was asleep. I had to stay with her because the doctor said she couldn't move her head too much.
Oswald was on the phone in the hallway. I sat in a daze by the bed, looking at my sleeping daughter worriedly.
Oswald could tell that I was depressed, so he accompanied me. He didn't leave the hospital that night, and I didn't let him go back.
Oswald was over 1.8 meters tall. Watching him lying by the bed, I had mixed feelings. If it had been before, I would have let him go back to get some sleep. After all, he had to work.
But now, I didn't know why. I thought this was his responsibility, and he had to stay. I didn't care whether he loved me, but he had to love his daughter.
Three days later, the doctor finally allowed Jocelyn to leave the hospital.
Back home, Oswald said that we should let Jocelyn rest at home for a few more days to avoid any further accidents.
He only took a break and went to work in a hurry.
As I watched Oswald walk out of the house, I began to fidget and think wildly.
I became more sensitive. I wondered if he would throw himself at his lover after he got out of the door. He must have a lust for sex. After all, he had restrained himself when he stayed with me in the past few days. It was time to satisfy his desire.
I suddenly felt that as long as he left, he would go to see Eleanor.
Oswald lied calmly to me. When he was out of my sight, he could do whatever he wanted.
Eleanor called me once these days and asked about Jocelyn's condition. I calmly handled it. Whenever I thought that she and Oswald lied to me, I couldn't help but shudder and sigh at their viciousness.
I must confirm as soon as possible whether Eleanor was "Mrs. Price".
What should I do if she was? I thought about divorce for the first time.
I gritted my teeth and told myself that I must let Oswald lose everything when we divorced!
Chapter 11 An Unexpected Finding
Jocelyn was scared by the fall and became clingy. She stayed in my arms all day long, so I had to be with her, which made me anxious.
Oswald was so shrewd that I couldn't find fault with him. He went to work and came back on time as usual.
I couldn't find any clues from all the things he brought back. Sometimes I suspected that I had delusions.
At noon, I finally put Jocelyn down and found that there were no fresh vegetables or fruits at home. Jocelyn was sleeping soundly, so I decided to hurry to the market.
The market was very close, so I didn't bother to change my clothes. I had to come back quickly.
I was stunned when I came back. I couldn't find my key.
I pondered for a long time and patted my head in frustration. I must have forgotten to bring it when I came out.
I casually called Oswald, and he answered the phone in a low voice. I told him why I called. He said, "I'm in a meeting. I can't leave. You can call Lelia."
Oswald was in a meeting again? He always used this excuse.
I had no choice but to call Lelia. It would be great if I could take back the key in her hands.
The phone rang for a long time before Lelia picked it up. It was noisy because many people were talking on the other end of the phone. She asked in a crisp voice, "Cass, what's wrong?"
"I forgot to bring the key when I came out. Can you bring it to me?"
"No, I can't. I'm busy outside," Lelia refused directly and said to the person next to her, "Hey... Wait a minute."
"Where are you? I'll go to you," I said. This was a good opportunity to take back the key.
Before Lelia could answer, someone said to her, "Please come over and check the location of this closet..."
The phone was hung up.
Closet? What kind of closet?
I was quite confused. What kind of closet was that? Lelia was spoiled at home and never did housework. Why did she have to check the cabinet?
I complained inwardly, "Lelia may cause trouble again. She never does the right things but always asks for money."
With many vegetables in my hands, I leaned against the door, discouraged and helpless.
I was worried that Jocelyn would be scared when she woke up and didn't see me, so I put the vegetables at the door without hesitation, went downstairs, and wanted to go to the company to get the key. I could see whether Oswald had a meeting or not by the way.
After I got into the taxi, I regretted it.
How could I go to the company like this?
I still wore a home dress, but I had no other choice.
When I got off the taxi at the gate of the Glorious Building, I laughed at myself. I should have changed my clothes before I went out. It was embarrassing to come to such a place in a home dress.
I hesitated for a while and called Oswald again. I hoped that he could bring the key to me, so that I wouldn't make a fool of myself. But he didn't answer the phone after a long time, so I had to walk in.
I didn't have much time. Jocelyn would be scared when she woke up and didn't see me.
Sure enough, as soon as I walked into the lobby, many people looked at me strangely, as if I were a monster.
The young staff members here were snobbish.
I quickly walked to the reception and wanted to go upstairs as soon as possible. There were quite a few visitors, and they were signing in. I spoke twice, but no one paid attention to me.
I waited patiently for the receptionists to finish helping those people sign in before speaking again, "I'd like to see Oswald Price from Prosper Materials on the 10th floor."
I came straight to the point before they asked me.
"Do you have an appointment?" someone asked coldly as a matter of routine.
It was the one who said that Oswald went out with Mrs. Price.
I was about to reply when she suddenly smiled brightly. She looked obsequiously behind me and said, "Here you are, Mrs. Price."
I was shocked. Mrs. Price?
I looked back abruptly...
Chapter 12 Who's Mrs. Price?
When I heard the receptionist obsequiously greet Mrs. Price, I was shocked and furious. I turned around abruptly to see how Mrs. Price would react when she saw me. How dare she claim to be Mrs. Price?
I coldly looked back. I thought I would see Eleanor, but unexpectedly, I saw Lelia.
She was dressed in the latest style. Her long hair was curled and draped over her shoulders. Her makeup was exquisite, making her look charming despite her unattractive appearance.
Lelia walked gracefully over with a calm smile. As she was about to speak, she saw me suddenly turn around with a fierce expression on my face. She narrowed her eyes and stood still in shock. She didn't expect to see me here.
I laughed at myself. I had to say that she was more like Mrs. Price, while I looked like a maid.
I was rendered speechless. It was true that fine feathers made fine birds. A home dress couldn't be compared to beautiful designer clothes.
"Let me officially introduce you to the sister of Mr. Oswald Price from Prosper Materials on the 10th floor."
I indifferently scanned the people around, including Lelia, and then turned around to walk toward the elevator lobby under their surprised gazes. I coldly said to the security guard at the barrier, "Open it."
This was the first time that I had been sharp-tongued. I couldn't help but curse secretly that they were all snobs.
As soon as I went in, I heard someone whispering, "Who... is she?"
I looked back at Lelia, who was still standing there. "Aren't you here to see your brother? Why don't you go upstairs?"
Lelia finally recovered from her shock and instinctively said, "This is my sister-in-law..."
Good!
What Lelia said dispelled everyone's doubt.
As Lelia walked over step by step, I reached out and pressed the elevator button.
Chapter 13 Dubious Keys
In the elevator, neither of us spoke. Lelia leaned against the elevator with her head lowered and her mouth pouted. I didn't want to talk to her. Her brother spoiled her, but I didn't.
I arrived at Oswald's office and found that he was really in a meeting. His subordinate asked him out. He was a bit surprised to see Lelia and me come together and looked us up and down.
He stared at me and asked, "Why are you..."
"Am I embarrassing you? I don't need to dress myself up when I go to the vegetable market." I interrupted Oswald. Of course, I knew what he was going to say, so I talked back angrily. "Give me the key. Jocelyn is still asleep."
Oswald strode back to his desk, picked up his bag, took out a bunch of keys, and handed them to me. "Didn't I ask you to call Lelia?"
I took the keys and glanced at Lelia, who looked displeased. "She's busy. It's more important to come here and pretend to be your wife.
"Have a good talk with her. I can't get her to help me." I didn't want to be nice to Lelia. "Your brother loves you so much that he even gives you the title of Mrs. Price!"
After finishing my words, I turned around with a cold face and strode out. I didn't have time to talk to them. It would be terrible if Jocelyn woke up.
I walked out of the building angrily with the keys and took a taxi home.
When I was about to open the door, I saw two new keys. I checked them and wondered what they were.
I found the key to the house, opened the door, and rushed anxiously to the bedroom. Seeing that Jocelyn was still asleep, I breathed a sigh of relief and sat in front of the bed.
I couldn't help checking the heavy keys in my hand. Somehow, the two new keys made me nervous. There were keys to this house, the place of Oswald's mother, and his office, but I didn't know what the two new keys were.
With the keys in my hand, I glanced at Jocelyn, who was still asleep, and quickly went out again. There were several shops where keys could be copied at the east end of the market. I went to the smallest one and asked the boss to copy two for me. Then I hurried home.
Jocelyn helped me a lot today. She had been sleeping soundly.
However, shortly after I arrived home, Oswald came back. My heart raced inexplicably.
"Why did you come back so early?" I asked.
"I was worried that Jocelyn would cry when she woke up, so I came back to see her." Oswald walked past me into the bedroom and took a look at Jocelyn. "Did she ever wake up?"
Jocelyn heard Oswald's voice, so she opened her eyes, arched her back, turned over, and said in a sweet voice, "Dad."
Oswald walked over with a bright smile and leaned over to look at Jocelyn. "Baby, are you awake?"
"Dad, I'd like some ice cream." Jocelyn stuck out her tongue and licked her lips, blinking expectantly.
"Okay. Let's play for a while, and then I will take you and your mom out for dinner and ice cream, okay?" Oswald pinched Jocelyn's nose. Jocelyn got up, crawled into his arms, and threw her arms around his neck. "You are the best."
I brought some water and fed Jocelyn. She was thirsty.
Oswald took Jocelyn to the living room. He glanced at the cabinet by the door and felt relieved when he saw the keys.
Without saying anything, I entered the kitchen and took out a pitaya. After cutting it, I scooped out the flesh and was about to bring it to Jocelyn. I accidentally looked at the cabinet, but the keys were no longer there.
My heart sank, and my hands trembled. As pitaya fell from the plate onto the table, Oswald looked at me in surprise.
Chapter 14 Spoiled
"How are you?" Oswald was quite considerate. He raised his head to ask me, "Are you too tired? I won't leave then. I will stay with Jocelyn for a while."
I tried hard to restrain my emotions. I nodded. "Yes, I'm tired. Then you stay with her. I will take a nap."
After that, I put the fruit tray on the coffee table. "Feed her some. And there are still some left in the kitchen."
"Okay. Just sleep. Let's go out to eat when you wake up," Oswald said as he began to feed Jocelyn fruit.
I turned around and went to the bedroom. I almost couldn't breathe. Tears fell out of my eyes.
It seemed that there must be something wrong with those two keys, so he rushed back to take the keys back. He wasn't worried that Jocelyn would wake up!
Men always became bastards after they cheated on their wives.
I couldn't help but think of Eleanor. She had been quite successful in these two years. She no longer shared an apartment with others. Now, she rented a big one alone. But she never told me where her apartment was, not to mention inviting me over for a visit. It seemed that she needed the apartment to hook up with men.
The more I thought about it, the angrier I became. It was really hard to know a person's true color just by his or her looks. I felt disgusted by what I thought of how I was fooled. No wonder she told me that I was tricked by Oswald.
She was simply provoking me.
Even if she wasn't Oswald's mistress, she must have done other disgusting things. If she never did anything, why did she lie?
Damn Lelia! Why did she cause trouble at this point of time? She unconsciously made things complicated. There must be a problem since Oswald and Eleanor lied together that day.
They must have some secrets between them.
It could be seen that Oswald must have been on guard with me a long time ago. No wonder I couldn't sense anything wrong with him. What did he become like this? How could he see me as a thief?
Thinking of this, I gripped the sheet tightly. I felt like there was a huge stone on my chest, making me feel a great pain.
Outside, Oswald and Jocelyn were having a good time. But inside the bedroom, I was heartbroken.
I had to make some preparations for myself.
At night, Oswald insisted on bringing us out to eat. I didn't object. Jocelyn used one hand to hold my hand and used the other hand to hold Oswald's hand. The scene was warm and peaceful. We looked like a happy and harmonious family of three.
I smiled with sarcasm. Oswald was so good at acting. He should work as an actor.
We got in the car. Before we set off, we saw Lelia come to the neighborhood with a bag. Seeing that we were about to go out, she looked at Oswald and asked, "Where are you going?"
Before Oswald answered, Jocelyn shouted excitedly, "Auntie Lelia, Daddy is going to take us out to eat in a restaurant!"
Lelia pulled the car door open and went in to sit in the passenger's seat without saying anything. Her arrogant look made me unhappy. When did she get the habit of eating in our home?
Oswald started the car and drove it out of the neighborhood. He also remained silent.
I also didn't say anything. I hated seeing Oswald like this. No matter what Lelia did, he would turn a blind eye. I thought he didn't blame Lelia for what had happened in the Glorious Building today. Otherwise, she wouldn't be so bold to follow us.
I really didn't know what to say to Lelia's parents. They never asked what their daughter did all day.
Oswald chose a relatively famous restaurant called Harmony Restaurant. It was time to have meals at this time.
Oswald let us get out of the car first while he went to look for a place to park the car.
We seldom went out to eat, so Jocelyn was excited. She kept chattering. Lelia shouted out aloud impatiently, "What are you doing? Stop making noises! We are out to eat."
Her words totally annoyed me. I couldn't bear it anymore. "Why should she stop? How old is she, and how old are you? You are her aunt, okay?"
"She's really spoiled by you!" Lelia retorted me with disdain. She muttered, "She appears that she has never seen anything!"
"What are you talking about? Who spoiled you then? You have seen quite a lot. That's right. But why can you see so many things?" I held Jocelyn in my arms and looked at Lelia with anger. "She's just a kid! Be more tolerant of her, okay?"
Oswald had parked the car. Seeing me scold Lelia, he patted my back and took Jocelyn from me. "Don't quarrel. Be quiet."
"Auntie Lelia is bad." Jocelyn felt that she got a backer when seeing her father come over. She complained to her father about Lelia.
Lelia glanced at her brother and put away her impatience. She said with a smile, "Kid, why am I bad?"
I hated Lelia when she was like this the most. She was obedient when faced with her brother, but as long as her brother left, she changed.
I dodged Oswald's hand, which was reaching out to take Jocelyn from me, and turned around to go into the restaurant.
"I..."
"Shut up! Be content with what you have, okay?" Oswald's voice was low, but I heard him clearly. It was rare for Oswald to scold his sister like this.
I finally felt better. He should have treated Lelia in a tougher way so that she could restrain her arrogance.
Upon entering the hall, I unexpectedly met Orlando.
Chapter 15 A Chance Encounter
Orlando was the director of the Marketing Department in our company. He was enthusiastic when seeing us. He entertained Jocelyn while taking the menu to let us order the food.
Orlando was in charge of the Marketing Department in our company. He could be seen as my successor.
I hired him back then. He followed me for more than one year. The Marketing Department back then was only responsible for selling things. At that time, we only had five people in the department. Orlando graduated from a famous college. He was flexible. He was born to major in marketing. He had a real silver tongue.
After I got pregnant, he took my position. Oswald paid quite a lot of attention to him.
He was Oswald's right-hand man.
It could be seen that he often came here. He asked the boss to prepare us a private room when he saw us. He seemed to be more familiar with this place than Oswald. But he called Oswald "boss" all the time. He showed enough respect.
Lelia also seemed to be close to Orlando. They chatted with each other happily during the process.
I had to take care of Jocelyn, so I didn't ask what dishes they ordered. I went directly into the private room. I knew that Oswald would treat me and Jocelyn in terms of this.
Orlando followed in after ordering. It happened that I hadn't seen him for a long time. I made a gesture, asking him to sit down and chat with me for a while.
I asked him about the situation in the company. Orlando made a perfect introduction. As he talked, he glanced at Oswald sometimes. I knew well that he was no longer the young boy when I was in the company back then.
People were changeable. It was normal. The boss was Oswald now. In Orlando's eyes, I was only his formal boss. I was no longer important. He didn't do anything wrong.
I was still a little disappointed anyway. It looked like Eleanor was right. I was no longer important. At least, I was no longer important in Prosper Materials. They had shown me enough respect to call me "Mrs. Price".
One day, when I divorced Orlando, they might even pretend that they didn't do me. Oh, right. Even Oswald betrayed me. Who could still remember me? Though once upon a time, I drank so much for Prosper Materials that I almost spat blood.
So pathetic. I got gallstones because of that back then. Those things had already become the past. People would only talk about my merits now, especially Oswald. Then I had to bear all the pain alone.
What a cruel world.
I made up my mind that I had to prepare everything well for myself. I had to make thorough arrangements for my future.
Accidents could happen at any time.
Thinking of this, I felt my heart in pain again. My nose went sore.
Would Oswald really be so ruthless to me? I couldn't believe that. I still had a fantasy about him. We had experienced so much together. Not to mention the contributions I had made, at least, I worked hard for the company once.
I didn't think he would really be so ruthless.
The waiters began to serve dishes. Orlando was sensible enough. He left.
When we were eating, Oswald answered many calls. But there was one time he looked at me once and went out to answer the call. I was alert again when I saw him like this.
I made up an excuse that I needed to go to thehe bathroom and also left the private room. I saw Oswald talking over the phone in the corridor. He kept saying "okay". The scene made me think of the video call he had with me in the corridor of a restaurant days ago.
Seeing me come out, he hurriedly said to the person on the other end, "Okay. There you go. Make sure the quality is good enough. Use the best materials. You can make the call."
I walked past him and went to the bathroom. I was wondering what this call was really about. It seemed to be about work. Why did he have to answer the call outside?
I turned on the tap to wash my hands. Oswald also followed me over. He explained before I asked anything, "It's about the materials used in a client's place."
"That should be Orlando's job, right? Why do they call you?" I took a tissue to wipe my hands while indifferently looking at his face in the mirror.
"Oh... It's an old client. I have to be more careful." Oswald avoided my question.
"Okay. I need to go to the bathroom. Go back to take care of Jocelyn." I said this because Jocelyn was alone with Lelia in the private room. I was afraid that Lelia would take the chance to bully Jocelyn.
Oswald pulled me over, kissed me, turned around, and walked toward the private room.
I smiled bitterly and went into the bathroom.
Before I went out, I heard footsteps from outside. It seemed that two more people came in...
Chapter 16 A Good Show
The sound they made was strange. They seemed to be having a fight or...
When I was about to push open the door and go out, I heard a man talking, "Girl, I finally got you. I miss you so much."
I froze there. It was Orlando. I retracted my hand which was about to open the door.
I didn't expect Orlando to be so bold. His wife was a pretty good girl. Yet he still had a mistress. For sure, men were all bastards.
"Cut the crap. You will miss me? You've fallen in love with another woman, haven't you?" The woman said with jealousy. "Look at you. You were really enthusiastic at the door just now. You never treated me like that. And you always tell me that I'm important to you? Bullshit! I can't see that at all. You know nothing but saying sweet words!"
"What are you talking about? You are the most seductive one. I'm serious."
Then I heard some rustling sounds.
"Be good. Let me kiss you. It has been..." Orlando sounded bold. His words made me blush a little. "That was my boss just now. How dare I not flatter him? That's my job. I have to earn money to raise you."
"Your boss is so handsome. He's much better than you. Ah! Why are you so anxious? Someone will come. Ah..." The woman sounded lewd. It was sure that they were making out.
I was a little angry. When I was about to go out, I heard Orlando talk again. "Stop eying him. He's not your type no matter how handsome he is. Both his wife and mistress are beautiful. You should just please me."
My head was buzzing. It seemed that even Orlando knew that Oswald had a mistress. My face was burning with pain. Just a moment ago, Orlando was flattering me and called me "Mrs. Price". How ironic.
I could imagine what he was thinking when he talked to me. He must think I was a fool.
My hand, which was holding the phone, was shaking. I felt a great pain.
The sounds outside were really embarrassing. I suddenly got an idea. I pulled the door to the stall I was in gently with my phone in my hands.
But I only heard the voice. I didn't see anyone. I looked in the direction where the sound came from and found that they were in the tool room. I walked over silently. None of them found out about me. I recorded what they were doing. They didn't notice it.
I turned around and left the bathroom. I checked my phone and found that I had enough evidence, including photos. The scene was disgusting. But the evidence might be of some use someday.
My heart was still beating wildly after I returned to the private room. I almost couldn't breathe.
In the private room, Lelia, Oswald, and Jocelyn. I couldn't hear them clearly. Jocelyn was laughing happily in Oswald's arms while shaking her legs. Lelia held Oswald's neck from behind. She was also laughing happily.
I was already used to her being so close to Oswald. The siblings were extremely close to each other.
Seeing me return, Oswald waved off Lelia's hands and asked me lightly, "Why are you away for so long? The food is getting cold."
I sat back in my seat. So did Lelia. She looked at me and said, "Cassie, why did you go? We are here to eat! My brother has no appetite without you around."
I ignored her, but I raised my eyes to look at Oswald and said meaningfully. "Some people can never be saved if they choose the wrong way themselves."
Oswald narrowed his eyes. He looked at me with a smile. "What happened? Why did you say this? Is there anything wrong?"
He asked me three questions in a row. I smiled bitterly and felt my heart in pain. It seemed that I poked his sore point.
I pretended to be calm and looked at him. "The world is really getting worse. Do all men nowadays cheat on their wives? Am I out of date?"
Oswald's eyes flickered. He deliberately fed Jocelyn a piece of meat to hide his anxiety. Then he raised his eyes to look at me with a calm smile. "Honey, you are getting more and more sensible now. Why are you saying this? Cheat? What nonsense? Who taught you this?"
Lelia muttered in disdain, "Sounds really sour."
I acted as if she wasn't here at all. I continued to look at Oswald and said, "Don't tell me that you don't understand. I'm not talking nonsense. Many men are just tired of their good lives. They can't control their desires at all."
I glanced at him. I could see the anxiety in his eyes, but he still looked normal.
With great pain in my heart, I said with a smile, "Honey, you won't do that, right? Why do you look so calm? We haven't enjoyed our lives quite much yet. Don't tell me that you also can't control your desire."
"Bullshit!" Oswald retorted with a red face. "I only need you. I have no extra energy. Don't try to frame me.
He pushed the plate, which was just served, with sea cucumbers inside toward me. "Have some. This is new. Don't think nonsense. I'm not that bored.
Humph! I snorted in my heart. He was still playing innocent. So cunning.
I didn't expect my words to annoy Lelia. She pursed her lips and looked at me with cold eyes. Then she said...
Chapter 17 Teach Lelia a Lesson
Lelia felt unhappy to hear my words and said unhappily, "Cassie, you should feel fortunate to have such a life. My brother is so nice to you. You should be grateful to my brother who works hard all day to allow you to be a stay-at-home wife and lead a carefree life. Who are you to be choosy? Don't be too bossy."
I glanced at Lelia coldly. "It's none of your business! Since when do you have to butt in when I'm talking to your brother?"
Lelia rolled her eyes at me. "I..."
"What's wrong with being a stay-at-home wife?" I interrupted Lelia. "I take it you have a bias against stay-at-home wives, don't you? No wonder you went to the Glorious Building to experience the life of being a wife like that. Does it feel good?"
I looked directly at Lelia aggressively. It seemed that I was too virtuous in the past, so she dared to think I could easily be bullied.
"How dare you say your brother worked hard and I just stayed at home enjoying my life? Even your brother dare not say anything like that to me!" I didn't give Lelia a chance to say anything. "Don't you or your family know anything about how I'd been looking for customers all over River City, groveling and drinking till I had gastrorrhagia?"
Lelia looked at Oswald with her little face wrinkled. It was clear she was so pissed.
However, I continued, "Then why do you think it's okay for you to enjoy the fruit of my work and spend our money? You take that for granted, don't you? So let me ask you, who's qualified? You?"
I stared at Lelia with my eyes colder than ever.
"Lelia, if you still want to depend on us and ask us for money, learn to be good, and in the future, do not say such things in front of me! Your brother will coddle you, but I won't."
"You..."
"Bossy? When you find someone you love, you can come and discuss this with me!" With disdain, I glanced at Lelia, who was exasperated and then said to Oswald, "You can't always coddle Lelia like that. You have to teach her how to respect others."
"Cassie, you..." Lelia slapped the table, causing Jocelyn to purse her lips and burst into tears.
Oswald then let out a roar, "That's enough! Come and have dinner!"
Seeing him roar at Lelia, I felt a little relieved in my heart, reaching out to hold Jocelyn and coaxing her not to be afraid.
Everything calmed down a lot, and we finally finished the meal. When we went out to pay the bill, the staff told us that Orlando had already paid it for us.
Out of the restaurant, Lelia was still angry and did not get into our car. I glanced at Oswald. "How about Lelia?"
Oswald said with a dark face. "Just let her be! I can't spoil her like that again."
I didn't say much. I didn't like Lelia, my sister-in-law, and was not in a position to say more. Plus, I had said enough today.
On the way, I made use of what Lelia had just said and asked, "How about I go back to work when Jocelyn goes to kindergarten again? Otherwise, you guys will always see me as a resentful freeloader!"
"What are you talking about, honey? I don't want you to work too hard. You worked so hard for this company back then, and now you can enjoy life at home. It is all Lelia's fault. Besides, everything in the company runs smoothly now, and there is plenty of administrative staff. It's not a good time for you to go back!" Oswald said as he drove the car.
I didn't say anything. To be honest, I felt it was ridiculous. After all, I founded Prosper Materials on my own, but now Oswald said there was no place for me. I felt it was so ironic.
Seeing I kept silent, Oswald took my hand and explained, "Don't get upset, okay? In fact, it's OK if you want to come back. After all, you're the one who got our company where it is today! You are the one who should take the credit. No one can deny it!"
I sneered in my heart, "Look! Oswald is singing the praises of me again! But I know he is just fobbing me off and buying time! How ironic!"
I didn't say anything but looked at the street outside the window, thinking, "In such a big city with hustle and bustle, I still feel lonely. Where is my home?"
The betrayal of this man beside me made me feel like I had fallen into an abyss. I involuntarily put my arms around myself, and tears welled up in my eyes.
At that moment, I had secretly decided in my heart that after Jocelyn went back to kindergarten, I would go to work.
Chapter 18 Hurt Jocelyn Accidentally
Jocelyn fell asleep before we got back home.
After parking the car, Oswald came over, took Jocelyn, and carried her all the way back to her bedroom.
I got Jocelyn settled and was ready to take a bath.
Oswald's phone rang from time to time. He glanced at it and hung it up, looking restless. And I knew he wouldn't answer in front of me.
Taking a nightgown and a phone with me, I went into the bath. I turned on the bath tap, and then I quietly propped the bathroom door a gap, paying attention to the outside. And sure enough, I heard Oswald talking in a low voice.
I found Eleanor's number and called, and the line was busy.
Sure enough, Oswald was talking to Eleanor on the phone, and I was so angry that my hands were shaking.
I took a quick shower and walked out of the bathroom. Oswald heard the noise, quickly hung up the phone, and came back from the balcony, pretending nothing had happened.
"Honey, are you done?" Oswald forced a smile, took the towel from my hand, and stood behind me, wiping my hair for me, but he seemed absent-minded.
"Who just called?" I asked.
"My mom!" Oswald replied in a hurry without thinking. And I flew into a rage inside.
Jocelyn suddenly cried, and Lelia flustered the towel in his hand to me and went to her room to escape my continued questioning.
I took the towel and thought for a while. I knew Oswald lied and it was not his mom calling. I turned and went to the bathroom again. Then I called his mom, and sure enough, she did not call.
I leaned against the wall of the bath, feeling helpless.
Oswald walked in with Jocelyn in his arms. It turned out that Jocelyn wanted to pee and woke up. He brought her to the bathroom to pee.
Jocelyn was still sleepy with her eyes closed. I knew she must have had too much juice during dinner.
Suddenly, Oswald's phone rang again. In the small bathroom, the bell was rather harsh. He was immediately frightened and panicked, forgetting Jocelyn in his hand and loosening his hands to get the phone.
Jocelyn fell and landed on the toilet. I watched the scene with horror, but I couldn't catch her in time. Jocelyn then fell off the toilet to the wet floor and burst into tears.
I rushed over. While Oswald was still dumbfounded, I picked up Jocelyn and saw her lips got hurt and were bleeding after hitting the hard floor.
"Oswald, you..."
I shouted at the top of my lungs, looked at Oswald, who was still in a daze and rushed out of the bath with Jocelyn in my arms.
Jocelyn cried out of breath, and the blood on her lips flowed down. I sat on the sofa in a panic and pulled out some tissues to wipe the blood away. I felt so depressed that I couldn't even breathe.
Oswald's phone was still ringing. He, too, seemed stunned by what was happening or distressed by his own fault. Then he followed us out. Looking at the blood on Jocelyn's lips, he seemed sorry and rattled. Then he also began to coax Jocelyn with regret.
I shivered, carefully pressed the corners of Jocelyn's mouth with a tissue, and kept kissing her forehead, asking her not to be afraid.
An unprecedented pain swept through my whole body. I never expected that the once perfect husband and father in my eyes would be so infatuated with a woman that he could ignore his own daughter. Jocelyn was so little, but she had to bear the brunt of our failed marriage.
I could not bear it, growling, "Answer the phone! I want to see who is calling! Answer it..."
Oswald cut off the phone in a panic.
I held Jocelyn in my arms who was still crying so hard. That pretty little face of hers was flushed. She was asleep just now, but suddenly such a horrible thing happened to her. She had just come out of the panic of falling down the slide.
I regretted letting Oswald take care of Jocelyn, and the pain in my heart has made me lose my mind.
"It's OK, sweetheart! I am sorry, sweetheart!" I couldn't hold back my tears any longer, and I started to cry with Jocelyn in my arms. At this time, her little mouth was swollen.
"I'm sorry, honey! I am really sorry..." Oswald flustered.
I glared at Oswald. "Look what you just did! Oswald, do you still have any conscience? Are you worth being her dad? Tell me... Who was calling? Why didn't you answer it?"
I shouted at the top of my lungs.
Oswald looked a little uneasy. He stood there, looking at me who was questioning him harshly. There was anger on his face, but he still managed to say in a soft tone, "I... Cass, it's not what you think at all. It's not an important call. You must believe me. I would never do anything wrong to you!" His voice trembled a little.
"Will you stop being so paranoid, Cass? It's because you've been thinking too much lately that I've been walking on eggshells trying not to upset you, so..."
"I'm asking you who was calling?" I asked again, not wanting to hear a word of Oswald's nonsense.
Oswald swallowed with his eyes wandering a little and the corners of his mouth twitching. Then he avoided my eyes.
"It's... It's Orlando. He wants me to cover for him. He has cheated on his wife and his wife's looking for him! I was afraid you would think too much, so I didn't answer his call in front of you! You know, I can't give him any advice in your presence for fear you'll accuse me of complicity, and I know you hate such things!" Oswald explained with a face of sincerity and grievance. "What a silver tongue!" I thought.
Looking at Oswald, I was hopeless, thinking, "With such being the case, he is still lying to me!" I was so pissed that I shivered with anger.
Just then, Oswald's phone rang again.
Chapter 19 What a Silver Tongue!
We were both taken aback. Oswald suddenly frowned, but I was looking at him with my eyes sharper and sharper. I aggressively looked at him and said firmly, "Answer the phone!"
Oswald froze.
"Oswald, pick up the phone now! I'll give you one more chance!" I looked at Oswald, held Jocelyn, who was still crying, close, and straightened my body. "I thought that even if the men of the whole world would betray their wives, you wouldn't. But you let me down."
I finally shouted the thing I didn't want to face out. I never thought that Oswald would cheat on me.
With these words, I burst into tears. Together with the crying child, there was endless sadness in the room.
Under my coercion, Oswald slowly took out the phone which was still ringing loud, and it was indeed quite disharmonious with the atmosphere at the moment.
I looked at Oswald, who stood in place and looked at me at a loss. Then he gradually clenched up his hands. I gritted my teeth and then commanded, "Answer it!"
Oswald picked up the phone, glanced at it, and said, "It's Lelia!"
"Answer it!" Whoever it was, I was not giving Oswald another chance.
Oswald hesitated for a moment. But seeing I insisted, he slowly answered the phone and quickly said, "Lelia, I am talking to Cass now. Can't we talk about it tomorrow?"
"OK! I will call you tomorrow!" It was indeed Lelia on the other side of the line.
Oswald looked at me innocently.
I was terrified for a moment and didn't know what to do. Hearing Jocelyn's sad cry, I had no reason to entangle Oswald anymore. So I got up and took Jocelyn back to her room and slammed the door.
"Cass... Cass..."
The moment the door was closed, I broke down sobbing.
I thought, "I was so close to ripping his mask off but he got away with it. Lelia must be covering for him!
It is indeed what Lelia would do! We don't like each other and she's my Nemesis."
This time, Oswald seemed to be a stranger to me. It seemed that I didn't know him at all. I didn't expect him to be so scheming and sophisticated.
I was terrified to realize that I had never had any idea about what the man, who had slept next to me for so many years, was thinking.
Oswald kept knocking at the door for hours, but I didn't open the door for him.
This night, I lay on the bed with Jocelyn in my arms and the scene of her falling down kept flashing in my mind. I was so regretful that I did not sleep all night.
Early in the morning, Oswald made breakfast and stood outside Jocelyn's room with an innocent look, calling us to get up.
After dressing Jocelyn, I carried her out of the room. Then Oswald hugged me and Jocelyn with a look of guilt and said, "Cass, don't be angry! I'm sorry! It was my fault!"
Oswald pressed his face to Jocelyn's little face. "I'm even more sorry for you, sweetheart! I am so sorry!"
Looking at the wound in Jocelyn's mouth, Oswald touched it softly with his eyes red.
I could see that Oswald was really sorry. After all, Jocelyn's small lips were still swollen. It was all because of his betrayal that Jocelyn had suffered all this.
"Cass, believe me! I will not cheat on you! Stop woolgathering! I feel sorry to see you like this. I reflected on myself last night and found maybe it was because I ignored you for this period of time. It is my bad! So, let's go have a vacation in Seittly this weekend, okay? There are children's playgrounds, hot springs..."
I was upset to see Oswald trying to play up to me, but I warned myself not to act rashly and alert the enemy. Considering what he had done, I should try my best to fight for the greatest justice for Jocelyn.
I collected my emotions.
"OK. You should have breakfast and go to work now! I was upset about what Lelia said yesterday, so... Forget it!" I used Lelia as an excuse.
With a shout of joy, Oswald hugged me and kissed me as if he had been granted amnesty. "I know you are always reasonable, honey. Just ignore Lelia! Honey, I can't live without you. I was up all night last night. So no more woolgathering, OK? I love you so much!"
I thought, "How ridiculous! Am I reasonable? Yes, I think so. And is it the reason why he cheats on me?"
I forced a smile. "Let's have breakfast!"
Although Jocelyn was a small kid, she was good at observing others' emotions. Seeing we both smiled, she began chattering. She hugged me with one hand and Oswald with the other. It seemed our family was having a happy and harmonious breakfast.
However, the wound on Jocelyn's mouth kept reminding me that Oswald, who was drifting away, had caused irreparable damage to my daughter and me, and I was wondering how I could find out who his mistress was as soon as possible.
After having breakfast and coaxing Jocelyn and me, Oswald went to work.
No sooner had Oswald left than an unexpected call came in.
Chapter 20 A Perfect Chance
I glanced at the ringing phone, unsure how to describe my feelings. The timing was quite accurate. Just as Oswald left, Eleanor called me. Oswald must have promptly reported the situation after he left.
I calmly answered the phone. "Hello, Eleanor!"
"What are you doing? Is Jocelyn okay?" Eleanor's voice sounded cheerful, as if she was in a good mood.
I thought, "Of course, Eleanor is in a good mood. I had a fight with Oswald, and she benefits from it."
"You're so free today. You have time to call me so early in the morning." My tone was filled with sarcasm.
"I'm not a robot. I need to recharge and refresh myself!" Eleanor chuckled. "I'll treat you to a big meal."
"I'm playing with Jocelyn at home!" I replied casually.
"Ah? That's great! Bring her out. I miss her. Last time, you were in a bad mood, so I didn't dare to stay longer!" Eleanor teased me.
I paused and contemplated. The opportunity was good. Since Eleanor took the initiative, if I didn't make good use of this chance, I would disappoint her enthusiasm!
"Alright! It doesn't matter what we eat. I just want a quiet time. I'll come to your place! I have never been to your place before. You've hidden it well. I can't even find your hideout if I need to contact you for something!" I said casually, without any difference from our usual bantering.
Eleanor seemed hesitant for a moment. I tightened my grip on the phone. It seemed like she was wavering.
"Don't tell me it's inconvenient!" I deliberately provoked her. I knew her personality well.
"Nonsense. What do you mean by inconvenience? Even if a man is hiding in my house, I will kick him out for you!" Eleanor quickly responded, "Okay, it's settled then. Wait with Jocelyn at home, I'll come to pick you up later!"
After hanging up, I held my daughter, feeling heavy-hearted. How good would it be if nothing had happened? I would just consider it as a nightmare.
At least, my daughter wouldn't be harmed.
Looking at her swollen lips, I asked softly, "Does it still hurt?"
Jocelyn shook her head and comforted me like an adult. "It doesn't hurt anymore. Daddy said he didn't do it on purpose. He made a mistake!"
I suddenly choked, wishing I could be as innocent as my daughter.
Two hours later, Eleanor's car arrived downstairs and she asked me to come down.
I hid the two keys in the compartment of my bag. I just wanted to confirm if the keys were from her house.
To my surprise, the apartment Eleanor lived in was one of the well-known high-end communities in River City, Golden Mansion.
Of course, I knew this place. This area had the best school, Rising Talents School, which covered education from kindergarten to high school. The education in the school was said to be top-notch in the province.
I mentioned this place to Oswald before and wanted to buy a house here so that Jocelyn could have the opportunity to attend Rising Talents School.
"Eleanor, you live in Golden Mansion. This is a surprise. I've been eyeing this place for a long time!" I sincerely said and momentarily forgot my grudges against her.
"You are eyeing Rising Talents School, right?" Eleanor responded quickly, "That's a simple matter. When it's time for Jocelyn to go to school, if you trust me, let her live with me! Then she can go to Rising Talents School!"
I stood still, feeling a surge of emotions. Was Eleanor planning to compete with me for my daughter?
Eleanor reached out and took Jocelyn. Then she suddenly noticed the wound on Jocelyn's lips. "Hey, how did this happen? I remember you didn't hurt your mouth last time?"
Eleanor shouted in surprise, deliberately touching my nerves.
I reached out and held my daughter before coldly saying, "It was an accident!"
Eleanor sensed my distance and froze for a moment.
Her apartment was on the 12th floor. When she opened the door, I looked at her keys. But Eleanor was quick enough to throw them into her bag.
I didn't get a clear look at all.
After entering the house, Eleanor threw her bag on the cabinet by the door and then reached out to take Jocelyn. "Jocelyn, let me show you around."
The house was spacious, a bit extravagant for a person to live alone. The house was well-decorated and splendid. Flowers blossomed on the coffee table, quite fitting for a single woman's bourgeois style. Compared to the 45-square-meter house I currently lived in, my place felt like a cold and miserable abode.
It seemed that people would truly experience ups and downs in life. I never expected Eleanor to live such a luxurious life after ten years. However, I could only afford necessities and needed to fight against my unfaithful husband.
Jocelyn screamed excitedly, calling out in a childlike tone. "Wow, Eleanor, your home is so beautiful!"
Hearing Jocelyn's joyful shout, I felt a pang of bitterness.
I followed them inside and observed everything in the room, hoping to find some clues.
