Chapter 1 Back From the Dead
Back in school, Veronica Kennedy bullied her classmate, Rebekah Shepard.
When the two were kidnapped, Rebekah's four brothers and her husband, Maurice Guerrero, chose to save Veronica.
To save Veronica, Rebekah had to go through hell. On the second day, Jensen Kennedy let the kidnappers break her arms.
By the third, Israel Kennedy agreed to have her injected with agonizing poison.
And on the fourth, Gordon Kennedy allowed them to break her legs.
All the while, Rebekah was four months pregnant.
As the pain consumed her, her family finally arrived. But her beloved pushed her off the building to save Veronica.
She died, her face mangled beyond recognition.
At last, her suffering was over.
But in the next second, something yanked her back to life.
Rebekah screamed, reaching out desperately for something to hold on to.
Her hands met only air.
"Rebekah, stop faking it and get up. How could you be so vicious, hurting Veronica with this whole kidnapping? You're done for!" The cold voice came from above.
Her eyes snapped open, staring blankly at the handsome man in front of her—Maurice.
Anger surged within her. "Why is he here? I just saw him die. How did his ghost haunt me so fast?" she thought.
"Rebekah, you vicious woman! You hired people to kidnap Veronica? I can't believe I married a monster. Drop the act. Get up and sign these divorce papers. Now!
"I'm letting you off easy because you took care of me for two years. We're over," Maurice said.
"Divorce?" Still dazed, Rebekah stared at his furious face.
She scanned the room and found it so familiar.
Then reality hit her. She was back at Veronica's birthday party, three years ago. But this time, she remembered everything from her previous life.
Back then, Veronica had framed her, accusing her of planning the kidnapping.
So Maurice divorced her, and the Kennedy family disowned her.
It was the start of everything that led to her death.
Just as she pieced it all together, an angry voice broke through her thoughts. "Rebekah, you're really cruel. In front of everyone here, I'm cutting you off. You're out of the Kennedy family. Take the papers and sign."
Rebekah turned to her enraged father, Malaki Kennedy, holding out the severance papers.
Her eyes moved to the rest of the family—Veronica, breathless from her fake sobs, her mother with a spiteful look, and all her brothers glaring at her.
Love or care from them was too much to expect. With a bitter smile, Rebekah turned back to Malaki and said, "Fine. I'll sign."
Chapter 2 Divorce
Malaki froze, not expecting Rebekah to agree so quickly.
Veronica was stunned too, thinking, "Rebekah used to beg for forgiveness whenever Dad got mad, but it only made him hate her more. But now she just agreed?"
Then she spoke up. "Rebekah, don't sign it. I took your place in the family, and I know that really upset you. That's why you tried to hurt me.
"But it's okay. I forgive you. Just stay with us, please."
Her fake tears made Rebekah sick. It was the most pathetic show of false pity she had ever seen.
With a relieved smile, she said, "Veronica, isn't this what you wanted? Me, divorced and out of your life for good.
"Yeah, you took what's mine, but you never give it back.
"You keep saying it, but you never actually leave. So who are you even crying for?"
Her words left Veronica speechless.
She couldn't help but wonder, "Since when did Rebekah get this composed?"
Seeing Veronica at a loss, Rebekah turned to Malaki. "Mr. Kennedy, after Maurice went blind in the accident, Veronica ran off overseas. You brought me back to marry him instead. Your family took care of me, and I felt like I owed you. That marriage was how I paid you back."
Malaki let out a quiet sigh of relief. She hadn't mentioned it, and for a moment, he had been panicking.
Veronica was relieved too.
Rebekah wasn't supposed to know about that.
Rebekah took the agreement without a second glance. She already knew it by heart from the last time she signed.
Without hesitation, she wrote her name.
Though Malaki was her birth father, the family had always denied it.
They claimed she was adopted, all because she grew up in Aelshore Town, which they saw as beneath them.
The agreement came in duplicate. Rebekah kept one copy, slid it into her bag, and texted her brother.
"I'm heading back. Veronica set me up. Get me the evidence ready in twenty minutes."
She wasn't leaving without making sure Veronica paid.
Nearby, the guests talked about her, calling her cruel.
But Rebekah, with a broken heart, couldn't feel a thing.
She handed Malaki the signed agreement. "Here's your copy, Mr. Kennedy."
Malaki took it, his gaze lingering on her calm face. She seemed completely indifferent, yet it left him feeling unsettled.
Rebekah looked over at Maurice, the divorce papers still in his hand.
Earlier, he had knocked her out with two hard slaps, all to defend Veronica.
It had been three years, and Rebekah had almost forgotten how strong she could be. If she wanted to, she could just end him.
"You've been such a fool for love," she said to herself.
Rebekah took the divorce papers from him, her eyes fixed on his chiseled face. Maurice was undeniably handsome, a scion of one of the most powerful families in Vertiron. No wonder Veronica had chased after him so obsessively.
A sad smile crossed her face. This would be the last time she let herself hurt over him.
"Maurice, I've cared for you in every way I could these past two years. I never betrayed you, and I kept my vows."
Her words brought back every moment of her care and love.
He stared at her, somehow unsettled by that smile.
In the back of his mind, a thought nagged at him, "But she's cruel. She kept hurting Veronica." His face hardened with disgust.
"Rebekah, you better mean it this time," he snapped. "Don't play games with me. Every other time I brought up divorce, you made excuses. But this time, you've gone too far. I will forgive you, for the care you gave me and for Veronica's sake."
Rebekah let out a bitter laugh, tears streaming down her face. She hated herself for crying over a man like him, but his words cut deep.
"I don't care about your forgiveness. You have never cared about me, not once. You have never believed me either. You are trash, Maurice. Perfect for Veronica. Since you're so into each other, I'll just step aside," she replied.
Maurice's anger flared. Just as he was about to lash out, she signed the divorce papers without hesitation.
Chapter 3 The Truth
When Veronica saw Rebekah sign the papers, she could barely contain her excitement.
With Rebekah divorcing Maurice, he was finally going to be hers.
Rebekah saw that Maurice had already signed the papers. With her signature, their divorce became official.
She straightened her back and handed the divorce papers to Maurice.
Maurice was standing very close to her. In their two years of marriage, this was the first time he had looked at Rebekah from such a short distance.
Her skin was fair, and her eyes were sparkling. Dressed in a black dress, she looked elegant and captivating.
She was gazing at him, but there was no affection in her eyes anymore.
Maurice panicked, feeling like something had slipped away from him.
He gripped the divorce papers tighter and tighter.
Rebekah turned to Veronica. "Ms. Kennedy, are you satisfied now?"
Veronica was very satisfied. Overjoyed, in fact.
Her entire scheme against Rebekah was meant to drive Rebekah out in front of all their friends and family.
And now, she had finally succeeded.
"Rebekah, I don't know what you're talking about. I never meant to blame you..."
"Oh, yes. You never blamed me. You just kept driving my family away from me, one by one. Congratulations! You've won."
Rebekah looked at her parents and her four indifferent brothers and smiled with calm acceptance.
She turned to leave with elegance and poise.
In the meantime, she was secretly timing.
The Kennedy family had thrown a birthday party for Veronica, but Veronica had been kidnapped and assaulted on that very day.
Veronica's maid, Clare, had testified that Rebekah was behind the whole thing. That was why Maurice had gotten so angry and knocked Rebekah out.
After all, he and Veronica had grown up together like childhood sweethearts.
In her head, Rebekah counted down: five, four, three, two, one.
Then, the large screen behind her started to play a recording.
"If you want to drive Rebekah out of the Kennedy family and make Mr. Guerrero divorce her, there's only one way. You'll have to suffer a little. Get someone to kidnap you and frame Rebekah.
"Everyone dotes on you. If you say it's her, they'll believe you. No one will believe that country girl Rebekah."
"Clare, but what if we get caught?"
"What are you afraid of? Every time you did something, Maurice always chose to believe you over Rebekah. He doesn't love her. He's always loved you.
"You're his angel. Why wouldn't he believe you?"
"Clare, I..."
"It's okay. I'll handle this. That day, we'll find an excuse to make Rebekah leave the house early, and then we'll have the others say it's her. She'll be kicked out for good."
The crowd was shocked.
"I'll be dammed. So Veronica staged the whole thing herself!"
"This woman is horrible. She actually went this far just to kick Rebekah out and steal Rebekah's husband!"
The guests burst into discussion.
Maurice's pupils shook violently. Staring at Rebekah's cold, refined face, he realized she had changed. She now looked down on everything.
Veronica was horrified. The big screen had been prepared by her brother to show her dance.
But now it was broadcasting her plot against Rebekah instead.
"No! That isn't real! That isn't me! Rebekah, why are you framing me? You're leaving, yet you have to drag me down with you," Veronica screamed, trying to take the upper hand.
Rebekah sneered, "Even if I framed you, all these people would still believe you. Even if you confessed to murder, they still wouldn't believe it. They'd defend you without a second thought."
Veronica's gaze dropped in disbelief. She couldn't accept that her secret had been exposed.
Maurice stepped forward to defend Veronica, "Rebekah, don't slander her like that. Veronica is so kind. She would never do something like this. Rebekah, are you framing her?"
Chapter 4 Her Departure
Rebekah let out a bitter laugh. Her eyes welled with tears as she looked at the man before her.
"Maurice, we lived together for two years. Do you really think I'm that vicious? I guess you do. You love Veronica so much that even her shit probably smells sweet to you. You'll believe anything she says.
"There's hard evidence right in front of you, yet you refuse to believe it. What can I say to make you believe me?"
"You..." Maurice trailed off.
He could see heartbreak and despair all over her face. It was like marrying him had been the most humiliating thing in the world.
She stood alone not far away. The large screen in the distance lit up her solitary figure.
The breeze lifted the hem of her dress and her long hair. She looked distant and determined.
Maurice suddenly realized that she had changed.
Those beautiful eyes were now filled with emotions he could no longer read.
Rebekah chuckled, "Maurice, even when the truth is right in front of you, you still won't believe me for just once."
Each word was like a stab in Maurice's heart.
Just then, two men entered, led by the police.
Everyone present grew even more gleeful.
The Guerrero and Kennedy families were always a hot topic in Vertiron.
The two men pointed at the dazed Clare in the crowd.
"It was that old lady who hired me. She gave me the money. Officer, I have evidence right here."
The police turned to look at Clare. She had high blood pressure, and now, with the video evidence out and the police arriving, her blood pressure spiked. Trembling, she dropped to her knees. "Officer, I did it all. Ms. Kennedy has nothing to do with it. If someone has to be arrested, take me. I acted on my own."
Rebekah looked at the tearful Clare, feeling puzzled. Why would Clare take all the blame for Veronica?
All she had wanted was to leave with her name clear, which was why she had orchestrated this scene.
Rebekah feigned disbelief and asked, "Clare, I never did anything to hurt you. Why would you frame me?"
Clare stared at Rebekah's stunning face and found her a bit different.
"Rebekah, if you want to blame someone, blame your own bad luck. I did this because I couldn't stand the sight of you. Your husband doesn't love you, and your brothers all hate you. I couldn't let you ruin this family. You're a jinx."
Rebekah gave a bitter smile. So even a maid despised her. Just how pathetic had her life been?
But from now on, she would live well and never again give anyone a chance to hurt her.
It was time to go home.
She had once lost her life for that jerk.
In her previous life, she had failed those who truly loved her. She wouldn't repeat that mistake in this life.
This family would fall into chaos, and she would stand by and watch the show.
Rebekah regretted having been blinded by love before.
But luckily, she got a second chance.
Turning to the police, Rebekah gave a playful smile, "Officer, please discuss any further details of the case with my lawyer. My lawyer will be at the station later."
Then, Rebekah walked up to Brisa Guerrero and whispered into her ear, "Mrs. Guerrero, to bring back the daughter your husband had with his mistress, you're willing to kick out your own biological daughter. Well then, let's see how the future unfolds."
Having dropped the bombshell, Rebekah strode out.
That was right. Veronica wasn't some adopted daughter. She was the illegitimate child born to Malaki's mistress.
To bring back the daughter of the woman he loved, he had switched the two babies at birth. That was something Rebekah had discovered while her soul drifted among them.
Brisa watched Rebekah walk away, stunned.
Maurice watched her thin, graceful figure receding. She hadn't even looked back at him once.
Maurice turned to look at Veronica.
Veronica nervously looked back at him. "Maurice, I didn't know... I didn't know any of it..."
Now that Clare had taken the blame for everything, Veronica figured she just needed to claim ignorance.
As Maurice approached her, Veronica's vision went dark, and she fainted on the spot.
"Veronica!" Maurice cried, nervously catching her in his arms and rushing out.
Just past the villa gates, he spotted Rebekah getting into a luxury car. He dashed after her, but the car sped off, vanishing in the distance.
Chapter 5 Moving On
In the car, Rebekah saw how much Maurice was worried about Veronica, and she sneered.
This was the way Maurice always was. No matter how vicious Veronica was, he still guarded her like a precious treasure.
A deep, commanding voice suddenly sounded beside her.
Rebekah felt a chill down her spine. Slowly, she turned her head to look at the elderly man next to her, and her tears gushed out.
"Grandpa..." Rebekah choked. She hadn't expected her grandfather to come pick her up.
This was Enrique Shepard, the man who raised her, the man who loved her most.
Enrique's aged face was expressionless, but fury radiated from him.
It was unforgivable for Maurice and the Kennedy family to hurt his sweetheart like that.
Enrique stared at her, looking angry. "Stop crying! I'm not dead yet!"
Rebekah smiled through her tears. In her previous life, after she died, her grandfather had been devastated and passed away a year later.
What a terrible granddaughter she'd been!
Rebekah beat herself up and started to sob uncontrollably.
The handsome man driving gripped the steering wheel tightly, wishing he could hack that bastard Maurice into pieces.
"I said stop crying..." Enrique was both furious and heartbroken.
Rebekah said through sobs, "Grandpa, Samir, I'm crying over my stupidity!"
Just like Rebekah, Samir Shepard was also raised by Enrique, along with two other boys.
Enrique wanted to curse but thought better of it.
Samir let out a helpless laugh.
"You finally came to your senses."
Rebekah gradually stopped crying. She grabbed a tissue and blew her nose loudly.
Enrique frowned in disgust and closed his eyes. "Seriously? How gross can you be? What kind of nasty blockage are you blowing out of your head?"
Awkwardly, Rebekah tossed the tissue into the trash can, sniffling. "Grandpa... I just feel awful. Hic... Don't hate me... hic..."
"Shut it!" Enrique's heart hurt even more.
"Okay! I'll shut up!" Rebekah obeyed immediately.
In this life, she would protect her grandfather and brothers. In her previous life, Samir had tried to avenge her but ended up being assassinated by a killer hired by Veronica. This time, Rebekah swore to change their fate.
She would rip Veronica's mask off and live it up.
Samir looked at her with his charming eyes. "Rebekah, would you like to go travel a bit and clear your head?"
Rebekah replied, "Mm! I want to go to the rainforest in Lorston."
Enrique nearly jumped out of his seat, his sharp eyes locking on her. "Say that again? You want to go where?"
His thunderous voice startled both Rebekah and Samir.
Rebekah shrank back a little, explaining cautiously, "Grandpa, I've been resting for years. I should go out and grow a bit."
Now that she had a second chance at life, she wanted to truly live for herself.
Enrique thought she could use some field training anyway, so he agreed. "Fine. I'll give you three months. If you die out there, I'll just pretend I never raised you."
Rebekah gave a confident smile.
"Grandpa, I'll come back healthy and strong and take care of you until you..." Rebekah cut herself off in time.
She grinned sheepishly.
Enrique shot her a dirty look. Until he what? Until he died?
Was she trying to jinx him?
Still, he nodded in satisfaction. "Mm! Samir, take Rebekah there. She can come back once she's cleared her head."
Samir chuckled lazily, dropped Enrique off at home, and then took Rebekah straight to Lorston in a private jet.
Three months later.
At the airport.
Rebekah walked out dressed in a sleek, all-black outfit. Three months of training had sculpted her figure into one of seductive strength.
Her long hair was tied in a high ponytail, revealing her refined features. Her eyes were sharp, radiating a chill that made strangers instinctively keep their distance.
Everyone who passed her couldn't help but glance in awe.
Rebekah pushed her suitcase forward and headed outside.
At the exit, she checked the time. Hallie Morton was supposed to pick her up.
But it seemed like Hallie hadn't arrived yet.
Rebekah took a deep breath, gazing at the familiar cityscape. She was finally back.
Suddenly, a cold, familiar voice rang in her ear, "Rebekah, where have you been all this time?"
Chapter 6 She's Changed
Rebekah frowned at her terrible luck. She just got back and already bumped into Maurice.
Something important was going to happen on the 10th of this month. She had to return to handle it.
Her gaze was calm and distant as Rebekah watched Maurice walk toward her.
He was tall and upright, with refined and handsome features, exuding a natural air of nobility.
Rebekah looked at him coldly, wondering why this jerk was here. Wasn't he supposed to stick to Veronica like glue?
Maurice stared at Rebekah and noticed she was different.
These past three months, he couldn't find any trace of her.
Only after she left did he realize the house was cold and hollow without her.
"I asked you a question. Where have you been?" Her distant expression flustered him.
He had just returned from a business trip and spotted her figure at the airport exit. He came over and confirmed it really was her.
She had lost some weight and become sexier.
Rebekah's expression remained cool as she replied, "Mr. Guerrero, we're already divorced. Where I have been is none of your business."
"Rebekah, let me remind you. We haven't completed the final procedure yet. You're still legally my wife."
Her indifferent eyes irritated him somehow.
Rebekah sneered, "Weren't you groveling at Veronica's feet every day? I already signed the papers, so why wouldn't you just file them? Maurice, Veronica has schemed against me so many times just to win you over. Is this how you repay her?"
"That last time was Veronica's fault. She said she'd apologize to you in person. Don't make it too hard for her."
Rebekah had known he'd defend Veronica, but not to this extent.
"She staged the whole thing and framed me. You knocked me out on the spot, forced me to sign divorce papers, and made me cut off all ties with my family. And now she wants to make it all go away with an apology?
"Maurice, stay the hell away from me. Just smelling your breath makes me want to puke.
"Just don't come into my life again. You're messing up my chances of dating hot guys."
Maurice said, "Rebekah—"
"Rebekah," from not far away, Hallie called out respectfully, wearing sunglasses.
"Mm." Rebekah nodded.
Hallie hurried over, took Rebekah's luggage from her hands, and loaded it into the trunk, then opened the car door for her.
Rebekah got into the car without sparing Maurice a single glance.
Maurice stood stunned. Rebekah had grown up in a small town. How could she have the connections or status to ride in such a luxury car?
At that moment, he realized just how little he really knew about the woman he had married for two years.
Rebekah used to be gentle, obedient, and crazy about him.
When he was sick for those two years, she took care of him meticulously without any complaints.
He was blind, so she'd sit with him every day, reading him news and financial reports so he could keep up with the fast-paced business world.
She even learned medicine and nursing to help him recover his eyesight.
He only defended Veronica because she had saved his life.
Maurice dismissed the thoughts, telling himself that Rebekah would soon come home on her own. After Veronica returned, Rebekah had thrown several tantrums, but she'd backed down eventually every time.
This time it was his fault, but he believed she'd come to her senses and return.
Rebekah always apologized first after their fights.
Confident in that pattern, Maurice assumed Rebekah wouldn't dare to go through with the divorce.
But this time, he was wrong. Two weeks passed, and Rebekah still hadn't returned or apologized. Maurice started getting restless.
He ordered his assistant to find out where Rebekah was.
At Ortega Hotel, Vertiron.
In the back garden.
Rebekah reclined lazily on a lounge chair.
In the past two weeks, she had grasped the power dynamics in Vertiron.
The incident at the Kennedy's villa hadn't made the news. Due to Maurice's influence, no media outlet dared report on Veronica's scandal.
But it didn't matter. Veronica, emboldened by the lack of consequences, was only getting bolder. She would dig a hole for herself eventually.
Before that, Rebekah had to take back everything that belonged to her from the Kennedy and Guerrero families.
She swiped her phone screen and dialed a number, the rhinestones on her nails glittering in the sunlight.
"Hallie, cut all business ties with the Kennedy and Guerrero families."
Chapter 7 The Inevitable
Hallie's name was given by Rebekah.
This little girl had refreshing features and sparkling eyes.
"Got it. I already sorted out the files before you returned."
Hallie replied briefly.
Rebekah was quite pleased with her efficiency.
"Good. Go ahead and call both families."
With a smile on her lips, Rebekah ended the call.
In her previous life, something happened today, right here. Because she got injured, Veronica swooped in and stole the credit.
Maurice benefited from it as a result, and he doted on Veronica even more.
But that credit had originally belonged to Rebekah.
This lifetime, she would never make the same mistake again.
"Rebekah? What are you doing here?"
Rebekah was surprised to hear Veronica's voice. In her previous life, Veronica hadn't shown up so early.
She looked over and saw Veronica and Maurice.
Now that Maurice was divorced, these two no longer bothered hiding their relationship. They brazenly walked side-by-side in public.
Rebekah raised a brow and looked at Veronica. "That's none of your business."
Veronica was stupefied. Ever since she fainted at the banquet and woke up, Rebekah had changed.
"Rebekah, this area is VIP-only. How did you get in? I hope you didn't sneak in without a membership. That would embarrass the Shepard family."
Maurice was staring at Rebekah as well.
Where had she been these past three months?
"Rebekah, where have you been these past three months?" Maurice walked up and asked.
Rebekah wore a white dress, reclining lazily on the lounge chair. She was no longer the gentle wife she used to be.
There was a cool, captivating elegance to her now.
Rebekah lazily glanced at him, sneering, "Maurice, we're divorced. Where I have been is none of your business.
"Haven't you heard the saying? Running into your ex feels like stepping in dog crap. So please, stay far away."
She was untouchable now.
"Rebekah, don't go too far," Maurice frowned. How had she become so sharp-tongued?
Rebekah laughed, "Did I say anything wrong? No. The only thing I did wrong was ever falling for you."
Maurice frowned harder. This feisty version of Rebekah was stunning.
Rebekah turned to Veronica, eyes gleaming with mock gratitude. "Thankfully, Ms. Kennedy here is willing to recycle trash. Her very existence proves I made the right choice. Now get lost. You're blocking me from scouting hot guys."
Veronica's eyes widened at those vulgar words.
Rebekah checked the time and casually headed toward the pool.
Maurice stared at her back, brows furrowed. He could feel something slipping out of his control.
Veronica looked worried. "Maurice, do you think Rebekah's been mentally affected by the divorce? Why else would she go chasing after hot guys?"
She emphasized the words "hot guys".
Sure enough, Maurice's face darkened.
Maurice's spine tensed, fingers clenched tightly. His pitch-black eyes were stormy with barely restrained rage.
"Let's go. Ignore her. Once she's done throwing her tantrum, she'll come back to me on her own."
Veronica's face turned pale. "Maurice, you're divorced. Do you still want her back? The one you love is me. We grew up together. I'm the one who's supposed to marry you."
Maurice said nothing, his face grim. He didn't want to divorce Rebekah.
The papers had been signed, but the final procedure hadn't been completed.
He didn't answer Veronica's question.
Seeing his cold expression, Veronica didn't dare say more.
But the plan today must succeed.
Veronica shifted her gaze to the swimming pool nearby.
The two of them walked toward the banquet hall.
Just as Rebekah got near the pool, she heard someone shouting for help.
It was a blazing summer day, perfect for swimming.
Not far ahead, the luxurious, romantic blue pool sparkled under the sun.
Several pools were connected together, and Rebekah walked straight toward the one where the incident had occurred in her previous life.
"Help..."
Rebekah jumped into the pool, swam swiftly toward the drowning old lady, and pulled her back toward the edge.
After safely placing the old lady on the poolside, Rebekah suddenly felt a sharp pain in her foot.
Her pupils contracted violently. In her previous life, Rebekah had injured her foot at this exact moment.
She was stunned. She'd got a second chance, but some things just couldn't be avoided.
Chapter 8 Impostor
Rebekah felt a sting in the sole of her foot. She was going down.
Elena gasped. Her foot was injured by something just now. She got scared and had cramps. It was the deep end. She almost drowned.
Watching Rebekah go down, Elena was worried. "Miss, can you hold on? Come up."
Rebekah tried to calm down.
Enduring the pain in her foot, she gradually came out of the water.
The blood in the water caught Elena's attention. Then, she noticed the blood stains on Rebekah. Her eyes darkened. Someone put something in the swimming pool.
"Miss." Elena tried giving Rebekah a hand, but she was too weak to move.
Rebekah realized something was wrong. She tried to crawl forward and eventually fell prostrate beside Elena. Her head was spinning. Anesthetics were added to the thing in the water.
"Madam, something...was in the water. I was paralyzed."
Rebekah was soaking wet. Her foot was bleeding nonstop.
The wound on the sole of her foot was horrifying.
It was worse than Elena's. Elena also felt her strength was leaving her.
"Don't worry. My bodyguard is coming. You saved my life. Thank you. If it weren't for you, I'd be dead."
Elena was feeble. Rebekah fell unconscious before she could respond.
"Madam Anderson, how are you feeling?"
Elena's bodyguard rushed over, flustered.
She pointed to Rebekah and said, "Hurry! Take her to the hospital! She's severely injured."
The bodyguard was worried about Elena. "Madam Anderson, I'll drive you to the hospital first."
"Do as I say. She saved my life. Take her to the hospital now!" Elena's tone allowed no negotiation.
Not daring to delay, the bodyguard carried Rebekah in his arms and drove toward the hospital.
Elena watched them leave and passed out.
Soon after, Veronica arrived. She didn't see what happened earlier.
She trotted to Elena. Seeing that the old woman was unconscious, she jumped into the water to get wet. Then, she came out quickly and, holding Elena, shouted, "Help! Help! Someone drowned."
Just then, Elena's grandson, Rodney Anderson, came to pick her up. Hearing someone yelling for help, he quickened his pace.
"Grandpa! Grandpa!"
He was more gorgeous than most women. But he wasn't feminine. He was tall and thin with a sluggish air.
Veronica couldn't take her eyes off him.
Unlike the aloof Maurice, Rodney was every woman's dream man.
"Sir, she needs treatment urgently."
Rodney looked at Veronica and said gratefully, "Thank you for saving my grandma. This is my card. Call me tomorrow."
Veronica took the name card and looked at Elena with feigned concern. "Sir, I only did what I should. Hurry to take her to the hospital."
"Miss, please do call me."
Rodney's eyes darkened when he saw the blood on the ground. Something was off. Elena was a swimmer. This was abnormal.
He carried Elena in his arms and left. The bodyguard led the way.
Looking at the name card in her hand, Veronica gave a spooky and triumphant smile. She had arrived at the scene late because she had to go to the banquet with Maurice first.
But she got what she wanted, anyway.
"Rebekah, just wait. I'll trample you!"
***
Rebekah didn't come to until the next day.
Samir was seated by the bed. Seeing her eyes open, he finally relaxed a little.
He couldn't help scolding her, "Silly girl, if you had stayed unconscious longer, your name would've been engraved on a tombstone."
Rebekah was surprised to hear that. "Samir, you mean I almost died?"
Chapter 9 Enchanted
"Yes, yes, almost. You finally listened attentively to me." Samir leaned against the back of the chair sluggishly.
Rebekah was frustrated, pouting sullenly.
This wasn't what happened in her previous life.
Last time, Elena fainted first. Then, it was Rebekah.
Veronica's men took Rebekah away, and Veronica pretended she saved Elena's life.
Now that she was reborn, couldn't she stop bad things from happening?
She had seen Elena's grandson once. He was extremely handsome.
After Veronica and he became friends, they hung out often.
Veronica winkled out a lot of business information from him to help the man behind her.
Who was the mysterious man? Rebekah never knew in her previous life.
Smiling, Samir said in a lethargic manner, "The news says Veronica saved Madam Anderson. When I saw you, you were all wet. Enlighten me. As an excellent swimmer, how did you let the accident happen?"
His tone dripped with sarcasm. Rebekah was vexed.
"Samir, did you forget to brush your teeth this morning?" She stared at him flintily.
Samir breathed out and frowned in disgust. "Do I have bad breath?"
Improbable. He used mint toothpaste in the morning. His breath was fresh.
Rebekah didn't respond.
Then, a realization dawned on him. He jerked up and yelled, "Humph! You ungrateful girl! I'm off. Your ex-husband is outside. He seems to have misunderstood our relationship."
"Meh! Damn that scumbag! I don't give a hoot even if he drops dead! Stupid jerk! Asshole!"
Rebekah was angry because she couldn't change her fate. She cursed Maurice for failing her.
Maurice happened to reach the door. He heard everything and frowned.
This woman was getting bolder. She even called him names now.
At the sight of Samir, Maurice responded to Rebekah's words deliberately. "You only know he's an asshole now? After he slapped you? Rebekah, are you brainless?
"Call me when you're done talking to the asshole. I made your favorite lobster for you tonight."
Rebekah sat up and called out, "Don't eat without me. Come and get me in five minutes."
Samir checked the time and said affectionately, "No problem. You have five minutes."
Samir left without sparing Maurice as much as a look.
The affection between him and Rebekah ate at Maurice.
Maurice walked into the ward and fixed his eyes on Rebekah. She looked pasty and vulnerable. It invoked his protectiveness and made her look enchanting.
His eyes grew grim when he thought of Samir, who had just left. "Have you been with that guy in the past three months?"
Maurice was powerful. If he wanted to know her whereabouts, there was no way she could hide from him.
His question told her he had never attempted to find her in the past three months.
An inexplicable pain ran through Rebekah's heart. But she pretended to be cold.
"Get to the point. If you have nothing to say, beat it."
Rebekah couldn't bring herself to be nice to him.
This man ruthlessly pushed her off a building in her previous life. There was nothing but hatred for him in her heart.
She was looking forward to giving birth to that baby. But Maurice killed her and the baby.
"Rebekah, will you stop throwing a tantrum?"
Maurice was running out of patience. Why couldn't she be as sweet and understanding as before?
"Veronica was wrong last time. I shouldn't have hit you. Now, go home with me." Maurice didn't wanna waste any more time.
Veronica had arranged a business meeting with Rodney for him.
He had to go.
"Go home?"
Rebekah looked at Maurice's enticing face. This two-timer was never patient with her.
But his patience seemed limitless when he was with Veronica.
Rebekah was simple-minded in her previous life.
She did everything to please Maurice only because he was charming.
What was wrong with her? The world was full of handsome men. Why did she only have eyes for Maurice?
Maurice grew up in a complicated family.
His father was a womanizer and had an illegitimate son.
His mother was in a mental hospital.
Due to his upbringing, Maurice had a dark personality.
In his childhood, Veronica was like a ray of sunshine. But when something bad happened to him, she ditched him immediately.
Come to think of it, Rebekah had never met Maurice's half-brother in her previous life.
Seeing that she was deep in thought, Maurice asked in a cold and husky voice, "Rebekah, are you listening to me?"
Chapter 10 Rueful
Startled, Rebekah patted her chest. Her lips were rosy, and her big eyes vigorous. "You scared me!"
Maurice looked at her, thinking, "She's adorable when she pouts."
The Rebekah he knew was inflexible and demure. She took good care of him and the house. After they got married, she cooked for him and waited for him to come home every day.
This was the first time Maurice had seen her lively side.
After he lost his vision, he experienced the darkest days of his life. Rebekah had been there for him.
As long as she didn't make trouble for Veronica, Maurice could be on good terms with her.
Since he didn't respond, Rebekah continued, "Maurice, you have a problem. Go see a vet. You forced me to sign the divorce agreement at Veronica's birthday party. I moved out of the house, and you gave me nothing on the financial settlement. You've signed the divorce agreement. It's taken effect.
"Now, you want me to go home? Do you have amnesia? Have a happy life with your beloved woman. Now, get the hell out of my sight!"
Something occurred to Rebekah.
Every time she fought with Maurice because of Veronica, she mollified him and begged for his forgiveness.
She had been so humble before him.
Thinking of this, Rebekah smacked herself hard in the face.
Maurice's brows knitted. "What was that for?"
Rebekah sneered, "To clear my head in case I fall for a scumbag again."
That wounded Maurice's pride. His eyes darkened. "Rebekah, you're..."
"Rebekah, time is up." Samir stood at the door with a wicked smile, looking relaxed and dashing. One could bite him.
What a charming young man.
Having been with Maurice for so long, she found outgoing young men like Samir refreshing.
Rebekah reached out and played the woman. "Pick me up."
Samir walked to her with a doting smile. "I can't. You're too heavy. How about a piggyback?"
Rebekah slapped his shoulder. "I'm heavy? You'll have hemorrhoids for saying that."
Samir was reduced to silence.
That was mean.
Rebekah could be vicious sometimes.
"Listen. Have a good rest when you get home. You were severely injured. Considering the big dosage of anesthetics, you'll lose your taste sense in the next few days."
"Then, what's the point of having lobster? I can't even taste it!" Rebekah felt terrible. Her mouth had been numb.
"Come up." Samir patted his broad back.
Rebekah felt a touch of warmth run throughout her heart. Her eyes welled up. In her previous life, Veronica hired a hitman and had Samir killed.
Rebekah assumed it wouldn't happen again if she stayed away from Maurice in this lifetime.
Resting her head on his shoulder, Rebekah said in a choking voice, "Samir, let's go home."
Samir sensed her weeping tone. His heart ached. How much had she been through?
Maurice glared at them. "Rebekah, you're going home with him?"
Rebekah collected herself, ready to teach the two-timer a lesson. Her voice had a twang when she retorted, "Maurice, I go wherever I want. What's it to you? We're divorced! I can't stress the word 'divorced' enough. As you wished, we're divorced!
"Your appearance is quite peculiar. But I'm tired of looking at the same face every day."
Samir burst out laughing. He and Rebekah had been close since childhood. This girl hadn't changed at all.
She had a sharp tongue but was soft-hearted.
After glaring at Rebekah and Samir for a while, Maurice left angrily.
Rebekah let out a sigh of relief.
"Samir, let's go." She pressed her face against Samir's back, which was warm.
"Hmm. Let's go home."
Samir carried her downstairs. In fact, she wasn't heavy at all. To marry Maurice, she was almost out of touch with her family. Now, this heartless girl had finally realized she was wrong.
After a moment of silence, Rebekah said ruefully, "Samir, I'm sorry."
Samir stopped in his tracks and replied in a throaty voice, "Rebekah, what for?"
